before I came to AH I knew nothing at all about WWII planes, but I knew the Mustang, Messerschmidt, and Zero.

I had never heard of the spitfire, I could ID by sight but not name the F4u (because of black sheep squadron).
I don't know what to put here yet.

I think that depends on the time frame.

During the war it was probably the 109. It served the longest time and flew in every corner of the western war against every allied nation.

Post war its  a real toss up.  I am sure it will be either the spitfire or the mustang.  As someone said earlier the spitfire is an icon so I have to place my money on it.  Although the mustang might "win by a nose."

personaly the only other ww2 plane's that look "good" is the p-51 and mossie. both of these planes took the publics heart.

not entirely on point....

The Hurricane got more kills because it was better deployed... The spitfire was factually the superior aircraft.

What I love is that the German pilots in the Battle of Britain would claim they were shot down by Spits just because they didn't want to admit they lost to the earlier Hurricanes.

In fact, prior to Dunkirk there were a few cases of Germans claiming to be shot down (or to have shot) spitfires even though there wasn't a single spitfire deployed on the European mainland at the time... They were Hurricanes.

The P51 Mustang---------Because of Chuck Yeager
The Zero-------------------Because of Tora Tora Tora
The Corsair----------------Because of Ba Ba Black Sheep
The Fockwulf--------------Because it sound like a cuss word

The Honorable mention is the B17 Bomber, i know not a fighter, but everybody knew of the B17.

This is my list prior to my first introduction into AW and WW2 aircraft.

Sure now i know of the spitfire. hurri, p38, 109, p40, p47, post AW, but these just weren't mentioned in the crowd i grew up with,  not like the ones above. Even us non-war buffs knew of the above planes.

Oh and now Honorable mention buff is the Lancaster.

Fockwulf is a brand, not a model. I think your talking about the 190, but the Fockwulf company made many other planes, another more famous one of the era, the FW (Fockwulf) 200 Condor...

i don't think i made the point i was trying too.

i was trying to make the point that the spit got its reputation (not deservedly at the time) from the battle of Britain were the hurri got more kills than it. propaganda made the spit a household name hence well known. if it had gone by kills then the hurri would have been a bigger household name, thats where it came down to looks. the spit is a beautiful plane where as the hurri is not, so they decided to make the spit the center of the propaganda campaign.

the b-17 got its reputation the same way from the film Memphis belle. the b-24 was a better bomber but again propganda played a huge roll in getting the plane into the publics houses.

yes the spit was a great plane and better than the hurri, i wasn't trying to say it wasn't.

Spitfire no doubt - very easy to pronounce and its beautiful shape is appealing beyond comparison. Its an icon. I'd like to glorify the 109 of course but the question was the "most known" not the "most preferred" :D

For worldwide recognition I'd have to say the Spitfire.

On a side note, the first plane I ever flew in AH was the Tempest in the TA.  Was so impressed the game actually modeled one.

Oregon's a state, I believe. I attempted to look up what might be the most popular WWII fighter plane there but there was no conclusive evidence. But there was a famous pilot by the name of Barber:

http://www.oregon.com/history/biography/rex_barber.cfm

Flew 38s and 39s. Participated in the Yamamoto shoot down.

I gotta say it's refreshing to see someone start a thread specifically interested in Oregon. Worldwide popularity polls on planes, pilots and countries are a dime a dozen here.

I could compile a list of all planes that did some extreme fate during ww2 that have been more named then others, but I conclude one thing: they were weapons of war.

Dont think one killing machine was more popular then others, in my opinion think P-51D gets more credit then it deserves since many other aircraft like P-40 were work horse of the army aircorp for many years, or Me109s rolled Europe like nothing, or Hurricanes that defended france, britain from devistation.

I think all planes were equal in mind of what they did, take it from Douglas TBD's entire squadrons shot down in midway with 1 sole person surviving.
That sticks out in my mind as those men went on a suicidal mission without escort fighters to try to save Midway island and destroy japanese fleet.
