Landing w/o a wing
« on: December 25, 2007, 03:40:45 AM »
Which aircraft can do this?  I shot the wing off an f4u but never got the kill as he drifted down to his airfield.  I assume that he "landed.";)

I bet plenty of you have landed without a wing already... but what about on the carrier?  Eh?  Betchya haven't done that!:lol

wing? or wing tip?

no wing = no landing

no wing tip = easy landing in most planes.

as for your carrier challenge, I once flew home 20 miles and landed a spitfire mkV on a CV with both elevators missing. does that count? :D

That's pretty good!

What I saw was about 1/2 the F4u's wing missing.  Does that only count as the "tip?"  He was floundering around real bad and I took him for dead.

With the stall limiter on it is possible to fly and land with half a wing without much effort. Your turning performance will suffer drastically though. With it turned off, you will turn better, but staying up with half a wing is much more difficult, but still doable. I'd not want to be too far from base though.

on ostwind took my il2s whole left wing off. I used the right as a crumple zone and got a ditch. It takes skillz and luck, and booze.

Losing 1/2 a wing or wing tip is not to hard to keep plane aloft / in flight........trimming the plane out and keeping speed up makes it even easier, when you begin to slow for the landing dropping flaps will improve  the planes lift to a degree.....slowing down to get the flaps out is usually the key factor and the danger zone for rolling it into the ground...... depending on which wing tip is missing will let you know which direction to enter your line up for landing on the runway or a CV......since your aileron is also missing on that side I usually want to keep my good wing to the inside of my turn direction.......with the 1/2 wing outside or angled UP.......

I have landed a P-51 with half a left wing, it wasn't that easy, it was like trying to land in a heavy cross wind and useing my rudder to keep me from rolling over, I had to float it in at an angle besause the right wing was creating alot of drag, but once I hit the runway, my landing gear gave way, but I lived.

If you lose half a wing in the P-51, just drop 1 or 2 notches of flaps, and the plane is much easier to fly.  Will even fly straight and level on auto-pilot then.

Some nasty Ostie did this to my b25, I was close to the ground but enough time to get the gear and flap out.

He didn't get the kill. I drove it back to the field and exited in the hangar

As said above, landing with half a wing missing is not a great challenge, most aircraft are quite docile particularly when you get the flaps down. Trim and flaps are the key.

Hell if you've seen the shape of Corky's planes when he lands....
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

If it takes full power to taxi to the hanger, your gear is probably up.

I have got plenty of practice flying without a half a wing, i can land on CVs all day long even with them turning;)

Given the choice of landing with only 1/2 wing, I'll choose the CV landing over the runway landing every time (in my F4U...).  With the landing hook deployed, you eliminate the toughest part of the crippled landing, which for me is keeping it on the runway damaged w/o skidding off.  Simply snag a wire, and land your kills!
