Fighterstick/pro throttle.. how do you execute your views
« on: January 03, 2008, 11:30:29 PM »
I am a lefty, but recently one of our community members, Homeboy, converted  a USB HOTAS to lefty for me... BTW he did a masterful job and is a real pleasure to work with.  I highly recommend him to anyone considering doing the same.

Anyway, as a lefty I always used the 10 key area of the kb for views and am having a hard time converting to hat views.  For instance, how do you guys set up to look.. up and in a direction at the same time.  you know, like up/left... up/forward.

I'm really having trouble adapting and could use some pointers.

Thanks!

Steve

Assign the UP view to one button on throttle. Now when you want to look left/up, just press hat and that UP button at throttle at same time.

Usually you can make 1 button "look up", and make the Hat your normal views.  Then If you hold down your "look up" button and use the hat it will give you your  "look up right, left" etc...

This is how I set it up... maybe just some practice.  i'm not very good at looking to the angles either... like forward left or forward right.  I usually end up looking left or right..... tips?  or just takes practice?

Thanks,

Steve

It takes some time to get used to it, like with any new setup.

I use trackIR, so I just look up/left:D
Make sure your hat is on 8way and I set my hat views with the cliboard set up,map the view you want to the different hat views.

Been using CH controls about 3yrs.  Like several others said I use the 3 forward buttons on the throttle for views. 1st is home; many of the planes I have normal view paged up but use home for bomb run, the other 2 buttons are 1 up and 1 dwn.  With fighters stick and pro throttle there are more than enough little buttons, hats etc to keep me confused.  An I used to be a musican so finger repatition shouldnt be a problem.  Me thinks old age might be a factor

Coincidentally I mapped mine to up, down, and auto level.  Still experimenting though.

on the STICK:
first thumb button that looks like a rook (4 way) is mapped to the 4 views, with the 'up' position mapped to 'forward up'.

the upper hat switch that looks like a diamond (8 way) is mapped to the 8 views (diagonals included).  don't use that much...mostly for cruise/pre-engagement views.

for the THROTTLE:
the thumb hat that looks like a rook- the forward press is mapped to the UP view so i can combine with the stick views for up/side views or up/back view.

it really becomes second nature after a while.

finally, make sure you adjust your head position so that the views by hat switch give you what you want.  probably the same as your keyboard views, but maybe not if this is a new setup.  i like to pull the rear/up view in some to give a bigger FOV.

i have a trackIR, but prefer the hat views in AH.

also, on the throttle:
the thumb hat that's like an H, I use that for trim tabs; down/up for aileron, forward/back for elevator (rudder keyboard).

three buttons are from left to right:
flaps up, flaps down, gear up/down

index finger button:
up- clipboard map
down- WEP

STICK:
thumb switch that is like a hatched cross, up is zoom in/out.

i have alot of unmapped buttons...

I know it's not the same, but my X52 has a pinky switch I use to look up. My central hat is view and the upper left hat is clipboard/zoom control. The guarded (such a good idea!) central thumb button is the pickle, the b and c buttons either side of the central hat are range and squad vox the upper right button is ord select. the two stage trigger fires primaries first then all guns on full depression.
The three 2 way momentary toggles on the base are flaps, gear/hook and speedbrake.
The throttle has throttle.... of course... the slider is prop, the large rotary is elevator trim, the smaller one is rudder trim. The thumb button between the rotaries is WEP. Before I got pedals I used the throttle index hat for brakes, I'm still yet to decide on what I'm going to map to it now. The large button in the big rotary is check 6.

Almost the same.  I use the pinky button on the CH joystick for my up views and the the hat on the side of the throttle for the actual left, back, right, etc. views. Pressing the pinky button and my hat would give me the up-left, up-right, etc. views.

I use the top hat on my joystick to move my head around the cockpit, since I love to fly the early 109s which dont have great visibility.

I also use the CH control manager to do all my mappings, and not the AH joystick mappings... I find the CH control manager provides more options (macros to set salvos, etc. etc.)  under this arrangement, my middle throttle button (the row of 3 at the front) would be my "Shift" button, the far left is my WEP, and the right one is the Clipboard map.

Enjoy the setup!
