Fire and planes and HEAT!

What about in the case of buffs?  Sure, the people near the flames would be affected, but others (those not near the fire) would not.  That means that in a buff (and maybe some other planes) that the gunners could keep flying, pilots could keep flying.

Far this reason I like the 30 (or 20 or 15, etc) seconds and boom rule.  That way everyone knows that a flaming bird is going to go away fairly quickly.  You could even do it this way:  30 seconds to boom once fire starts; after 10 seconds, guns go inop; after 20 seconds the engines fail; 28, 29, BOOM!!!

This is the best idea ... maybe HT could reuse some of the black-out/red-out code to achieve this.

Another good reason to fly the 38.  It keeps the fire away from the cockpit :)

I shot a P47 near the wingroot with the maingun on a Firefly. The Jug burst into flames, and flew around for 6 minutes.

Yeah, the damage model where fire is concerned is a little lacking.

Ya fill up the cockpit with flames, and turn off controls except bail out.

seems as the pilot would be in the process of being cooked in a furnace if they stayed in the cockpit their ability to manipulate the controls would be diminished.

combining the "do not move your controls so rapidly" code with the fire damage would be a logical step towards more realistic behavior from aircraft on fire.

The planes you people see flying around for minutes on fire are bugs. Planes that actually are on fire explode after about 30 seconds.
