Super anime mega discussion thread!
« on: January 21, 2008, 09:07:50 AM »
Since the anime stuff is starting to intrude on the funny pics thread, I figured I'd start a new one to keep the issues seperated and keep the phunny phlowing.

I know theres other anime fans out there, so lets get diskussin. Whats your fave shows, what ones can't you stand? Fave characters? Hate it?

Tell all! Just keep the discussion and images AWAY from hentai please- and for those who don't know what Hentai is, its that nasty porn that unfortunately everyone first thinks of when they think "anime".
Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

I used to like it... when I was 12 to 15. Then I discovered real porn and cars and grew out of it.

Now it is a form of geekery I try and hide from friends and co workers.

Here's to settle the score.

Asking what anime is is like explaining what is the Hollywood audio-visual complex.  There's just too much styles in anime to mention in just one sentence, it's like listing down how many genres are being churned out in American music and movies (including indie)  Anime is what makes up the Japan Ink complex.  This includes Manga (comic).  Japan Ink = Japanese pop culture.

Even the Nissan engineers openly admits that the new Nissan GT-R super car design was inspired by animes that feature futuristic robots.  Now that explains why the new GT-R looks... robotic:p

From our discussion in the other thread...

Thanks for the feedback.  I appreciate it on an artistic level, chicks are cute albeit cartoons.
The manga thing I think I've a little exposure to.  I read a series of books a few years back that a friend recommended to me - Battle Angel Alita if I remember correctly.  Would that be considered manga?  I enjoyed it thoroughly in any case.

And yes, unfortunately hentai is my default thought when I hear anime. ;)

To me, anime is not about sexy girls and hentai. I enjoy stories, fantasy and silly humor (Disney cartoom humor is stupid IMHO)

My fav anime is the entire collection of 'Ghost in the Shell' movies and multiple series. I find that it has most realistic representation of a future with some great philosophy bits.

Samurai Champloo FTW.  Liked Ninja Scroll as well.  Other than that never really got into the whole Japanimation thing....  OK, OK, maybe a lil Cowboy Beebop on Adult Swim when no one's lookin.

First one I ever got hooked on was the various Gundam storylines (Took "Treize" from Gundam Wing), current faves include Bleach, Ghost in the Shell and a few other occasional ones I watch when I can catch them.

Have several Gundam series on DVD.

Biggest problem I have with any of the various combat/miltary based anime series/movies is that they are almost always extremely preachy on the anti-war message. Gundam Wing was rediculous with it, especially the series finale. The philosophical stuff adds a lot to the story lins and makes them "deeper", but some of it goes way overboard.

And I can see the "I'm not talking about Hentai" disclaimer did a lot of good, but I guess I was right about that being the first thing people think of. :(

That's funny you mentioned' that. It instantly reminded me of Robotech, which was one of my favorites' when I was a jr. high schooler. In all three of it's generations, Robotech had plenty of great action in it, but there was always an anti-war backround to everything. Having the earth nearly destroyed in the first series' was the most poignant.

Other than that, alotta the stuff on adult swim is pretty good.

I also like the fact that a lot of anime doesn't take itself overly serious, even the "serious" series usually have someone whos a good "comic relief" or else they occasionally drop in a funny visual or verbal joke.

But one thing that does bug me is that even in series based solely in Japan, including ones based around school-age characters, an awful lot of them look caucasian. Its like they have some issue with doing themselves in animation. Stuff that takes place all over the world I can see (ie- Gundam wing, in which the main characters were a Japanese, a Chinese, an American, a blond-haired, blue eyed Middle Easterner, and an 'unknown'), but some of it stretches things a bit.
