The new Winchester 70 rifles will have a 1 MOA accuracy guarantee.

However, suggested retail price for the different models will run from $999 to $1,199   For just $100 more, one could buy a Kimber instead.

The price of new guns is becoming outrageous.

The Beretta in "Lethal Weapon" was a regular 92 in 9MM. I've tried a bunch of them and never been satisfied. And chambering it in 45ACP won't help what was wrong with it. I've found the 92 design itself to be weak and inaccurate. It doesn't have failure to feed or failure to eject jams too often, but it just doesn't shoot well, it gets tired and loosens up easily, and over all just doesn't live up to the hype.

All of my Model 70 rifles have shot well. We'll see about the 270 soon. I've never seen Winchester fail to fix a problem like yours, provided you go back to Winchester. My 30-06 had problem when I got it. The bluing salts had not been cleaned out of the bolt, and that screwed up the bolt and the safety. They fixed it right the first time when I sent it back, and paid the shipping. Don't take one back to the store though, the store ships them to a repair shop. Mine came back unrepaired. When I notified Winchester, they jumped through hoops to get it and fix it. This was less than 6 months before they closed the old plant.

Here is my newest… It’s an 1873 Springfield trapdoor 45/70cal. All original, with a real good bore. I bought it at an estate auction last week.

45/70 black powder rounds run about a buck and a half apiece. But I already cast all of my own bullets for my muzzleloaders. So now I just need to get a mold for this caliber and the equipment to load black powder cartridges. Should be able to get everything I need for about sixty dollars.

Is this the gun Custer's men were using?

Yes, it was the weapon in use at that time. However Custer’s men being cavalry would have used the carbine version, with a shorter barrel and cut down stock.

I’ve since ordered a lee loader in this caliber, and some new 45/70 brass. I just need to order the right bullet mold.

If you’ve never seen a (hammer operated) Lee loader in action, this is kind of interesting… It’s a slow process, but real black powder dirties a gun up rather quick so I’ll probably only shoot a few rounds at a time from this thing..

yeah guns are getting very expensive.

exchange rate differences and shipping charges bloat the prices we pay in new zealand to painful levels. when i bought my model 70 in 1997 it cost me the equivalent of u.s$780, which i thought at the time was pretty reasonable, but  the price range you quoted for the new model 70's would likely equate to u.s$1,500 to u.s$1,700 which as you say is not far away from the price of a top-end hunting rifle like the kimber. a new kimber montana sells for about u.s$1,800 in nz. and if you want a semi auto like the springfield m1a you are going to need a fat wallet because it will set you back u.s$2,100.

anyway it's good to hear that the model 70 has made a comeback, even if it's a little on the pricey side.

In that case you might like the new FNP-45, made at the same factory in South Carolina as the new Winchester Model 70.   It holds 14 +1 rounds of .45 ammo!

unfortunately i couldn't rely on winchester to get my rifle fixed

i bought my model 70 from a shop that imported it direct from the u.s, so it was not sourced from the authorised nz winchester agent. i saved at least $100 on the deal but the downside was that there was no compulsion on the nz winchester agent to honour any winchester warranty, as there would have been if the rifle had of been sourced from them.

Odee,

I'd like them but I doubt I can afford them. I keep toying with the idea of getting into the Cowboy shooting gig. I've got one Ruger now in .45 LC but I'd still need a rifle in a pistol caliber. sigh.....

I do love my marlin in 45-70.. Nothing like the large push of the old Buffalo round. Most of my hunting with the marlin is "pigs on the run" if we cant get close to use the 12ga.. Reloading the 45-70 is very straight forward and you can cook up some pretty hot loads. I do like the lever revolution that Hornady has been making.

$500 New.. The stainless one is around $600..

I got the guide gun and love it. You do need to replace the recoild pad if your going to be shooting the PMC +P+. I do have a couple boxes minus 1 round if you like recoil.. I will never shoot that short gun with those hot hot loads.

Yeah I like the marlins. I had the guide gun shortie chambered in 450 Marlin but I gave it away to my Pro Hunter in Africa after he put me on about 10 record book critters on one safari.

I have the stats written down somewheres but basically he put my son and I on record book warthog, an Eland, waterbuck, an Impala that looked like a Mule Deer, a monster wildebeest, and others. He absolutely loved that guide gun and it was perfect for the African bush so I just gave it to him.

I figured I'd eventually get a 45/70 guide gun but haven't so far. I do love that cartridge tho.
