First successful GV incorporated FSO
« on: February 02, 2008, 02:34:48 AM »
I know a there are some who may have been less than happy with this event. That is to be expected. Honestly, could any event that charged into unaccomplished territory like this one did, go without a group that thinks it is FUBAR?

Those of us that have participated in FSO for some time, all know that GV's have NEVER been used with ANY real success in FSO before. AAMOF, in previous tries GV's have been ditched after just a one frame attempt.

That was not the case this time. For the first time we have been able to incorporate the use of GV's in an FSO event, for the entire event. And there are a great many in FSO that had a good time with them, and probably look forward to them being used again.

That is not to say there were not problems. Adjustments were need, and made. More adjustments may need to be made the next time this event is run. But to say this event was a "failure" or "waste of time" is completely unfair, and the facts don't support it.

The fact is that GV's were used with much success in this FSO, and that is a first. This event has paved the way for GV use in the future.

I think even though it was not perfect (what event is?). Stoney and Gaiden deserve a BIG Thank you, and congratulations!

My biggest gripe is that it felt more like flying over Tank Town on the Mains than anything else. Although I suppose it will take some experimenting to figure out how to GVs to meet objectives.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

I kind of agree with Sax..

I liked that this was tried, and after some growing pains it got very good.

But since the objective was 'kill stuff' the event was a little thin on drama.

I'd like to see GV's used in a stratigic role, perhaps some manner of capture points.  I don't know how much AHII would allow for this, but maybe a scenario where x number of a side's tanks need to remain in the area of a capture point for x minutes to capture a base?

Aircraft in a supporting role.

It becomes something of a 'capture the flag' game where each team is trying to old an objective for a specified period.

I don't know if the existing engine can do that or score that, but it sure would be fun.

My only problem with GV's in this FSO was that there was no greater objective.... Well, that and the roles seemed a little confused.  For instance in frame 2 the Russians were entrenched in the forest and the Germans were on the move... unless I have my history wrong the Germans were entrenched and the russians should have been trying to break the line... Meaning that the Germans should have spawned to the 'Engagement Area' and the Russians should have been the ones driving to that location at risk.

Anyhow, a great event all up, and with work, bound to improve.

Stoney, your last two events have been landmark in my opinion - First you gave us back weather, and then you gave us GV's!

All Hail Stoney!

Keep up the good work.

I agree with Kurt. While I was not present in this last event, I do have the FSO forum and the CM forums to discuss and be a part of the brainstorming and critique. Stoney has, and continues to be an excellent addition to the FSO Admin staff. He has a terrific grasp of the history and the nostalgia of WWII. I am happy to be a part of this FSO team. Gaiden continues to shine in the setup role as well. This was a tricky setup and I can only imagine what his level of concentration is on game day. Well done, both of you!
