Very off topic tech question
« on: February 15, 2000, 07:52:00 PM »
Ok guys, I was on my comp the other night and my connection was fine, normal 33.6kbps.  Logged off AH, did some other stuff, logged off completely, and when I relogged the highest I could get my connect was 21.6kbps.  Anybody ever have this problem before? No, it's not with my ISP because my other comp connects fine.  I checked the modem and even switched the slot that it was in.  Same result.  I think something must have set the max speed back somewhere (no, not in the dial up window).   If someone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

I was getting very low frame rates the other night in Aces High. Restarted the game several times, nothing worked. Then I did the trusty old computer reboot, did the trick. (Don't ask me why)

Hblair, did you accidentally post in wrong topic or misread question?  If the second, my Q is about connects, not FR.  Sorry for the blunt answer but that about covers it.

I think what he was getting at was, did you try to reboot?  Alot of the time that will clear up a problem.

I connect at anywhere from 26.4 to 28.8 and on rare instances at 33.3,depending on the mood of the net gods. Not sure what exactly causes it, I always thought it was line quality varying from night to night but if you have other computers that dont suffer this problem...I would be curious to the answer to this one as well.

first i'd like to say... BURRRRRPPPPP.

21k connect? Sounds like the modem is f**ked.

Generally the only reason modems run slow is the piece of wire from your house to the local exchange. Each telephone has a 64k card (unless your behind a Digital PABX) which generally flows into a digital connection thru to your isps hardware (this why 56k works). If the wire is unbalanced you get this... or if rats have been chewing it.

However,if you have another modem on the same line running ok, I'd say check the modem->telephone socket cable, or your modem is half fried.

If your other PC isn't using the same line, and you get a different modem running slow on the same line, I'd ring your phone company and scream at them... sorta like Channel 100 :-).
