New Default Skins for Panzers and Tigers
« on: February 07, 2008, 12:43:18 PM »
Alright for all you old ladies who say use the search use the search!!  I have.  Couldnt find it.  If this has been addressed my apologies.  Im not a librarian.  Besides that it needs addressing again anyhow.

Now then.

Nothing like trying to hide an orange tiger or panzer in green trees.  I disagree with skins being able to be disabled when it comes to GVs.

Isnt it bad enough we have to have a kick me sign following us around?

Never did understand why gvs need the arrow pointing at them for fighters/bombers to come in and ruin a 15 minute drive.
Tracers alone should be enough for anyone with a little skill to see where the tank is.

We even have "shift F4" for crying out loud.

At least have the lable appear at say only 500 meters or less or something!  If a GV hits the forested areas by god let them hide and not be seen except when he fires.

So if the the tank lable has to stay, can we at least have the Tiger/Panzer and yes the T-34 please have a default skin similar to the Sherman?

Oh and if the tiger is now going down with a mere hit from an M8 please adjust the perk points required for it.  It is not all that anymore.  In fact?  The Tiger sucks anymore.  I died the other day when a squirel tossed an acorn at me.  (True Story)

Anyway.  Lets hear all the hatred.  (Dons on Flame retardant suit and fills extiguishers).  Waiting for the attack.

O kill you are so right. :aok  Id love to see the icons go the way of the doe-doe birds and the HE 111s but I dout you will, the reason is imagin if the guys in the air all of a sudden had to realy pay atention to see a GV then had to try to disern friend from foe LOL thay would all quit,, well moast would. Immagin that lank as it dives down then as it releases its bomb its wings pull up but the rest of him does not,, *snickers*  Imagin if the flight mod was set to realistick and colisions where turnd on all the time LOL LOL LOL I would likely sit the tower all day laffing my A** off. but soon the air heads would just stop playing because thay could not get the all importent points. A sinickle vue to be sure but realistik im afraid.

Well?  Great points we could fix.  How about the hey Im here kill me signs were on only for freindlys as they are.  Im thinking it would be more fun for people to have to find the GV and not have it mapped out and practicallyy killed for them as well.  I still say at least let the woods hide the GVs.  Great points!

I have a hard enough time finding GVs as it is. I need to be below 1500 AGL to even see icons (or so it seems to me).

I think we should have a system where the GV icon appears only while the GV is moving (thinking dust trails here)....the icon can disappear if the GV stops or is hidden between trees.

As far as the skins go, I think the default skins should be tied to and changed with terrains (like we H2Headers used to do in AH1). Nothing funnier than seeing a brown panzer on a green hill.

Hazard, we were still tying skins to H2H maps just before it closed. (Friendly heads-up)

AWESOME IDEAS HAZARD!!!!  That is the kind or (kinds) of things I am trying to say!

That would be fine.  Dust trails is brilliant.  That is how they were found in the real deal.

Great idea!
Especially with the guys who game it by turning graphic detail down. I doubt a guy flying 300MPH at say 4K could spot a little GV.

If you can see individual swimming pools and houses at 40,000 feet doing 500+mph, (which you can, folks have posted airliner photos before) you sure as **** can see a giant eyesore of a GV at 3,000ft doing 200mph.

Very true Krusty, however I think what we're trying to have happen here is the default skin changed making it harder to spot the GVs and have the icons of GVs invisible to planes.

I don't recall the last time I flew over a city looking below and seeing tags

Greetings,

I vaguely remember watching an A-10 gun camera while it was 'playing' at the NTC in the late 80s.

We had had a bit of problem of the A-10s shooting the good guys and not the bad guys during NTC rotations.  The Squadron Cdr invited the Bde, Bn and Co Cdrs over to show why it was so hard to tell the difference between the OPFOR's Sheridan T-72s and BMPs verses us in the M1s and M113s.  From their gun film, it was just a dark dot - heck couldn't even see the direction the tanks' gun tubes were pointing.

Also, the Sqdn CO specifically stated use of TACAIR against stationary targets (dug in tanks and BMPs) was a total waste as his pilots would not be able to consistently id a stationary target.  I have had Rotary Wing Bn Cdrs and S3s state the same thing (both early Apache and Cobra units.)

As I recall, my Company got decimated by friendly A-10s while conducting an attack near the Spider in the next rotation.  We had 'punched' throught the initial defensive belt and were moving to intercept the OPFOR's Combined Arms Reserve.  The Bn/TF Cdr was extremely pleased with the ALO during the AAR as I recall.....

Of course, we don't have time nor the command and control structure to work out the Fire Control Graphics to control CAS, so maybe just an icon that says bad guy or good guy but not type of vehicle.  If it could be turned on and off when the vehicle is moving vrs stopped would be great also.

Regards,

It's a great idea, however it's simple enough to spot the black dots the GVs currently make in-game. Perhaps it would be an advantage to GV'ers if pilots would not get icons on GV's.

As others have stated in the past, the majority of the time the GV is never spotted, the pilot simply manages to see the GV's icon in time before it gets out of their Field of View.

But you could tell it was a truck, right? You might make out the color, too? And you could tell the direction it was heading?

In the war, only one side used a panzer, one side used a sherman (P.S. This often had huge white stars painted on top -- a dead giveaway) and usually they were on opposing sides from each other, heading in only one direction.

In the war, in real life, you could easily tell* who was with what side based on what you saw. Same in the air. You saw 2 booms you KNEW it was an allied P-38. It's that simple. However in here, the enemy also flies your plane, drives your tank, could be mixed up in the middle of it all heading in any direction at any time.

This isn't a war simulation. It's a flight simulation. That being said, certain concessions MUST be made in the name of gameplay. One of them is icons. Without icons, tags, SOME indicator, this game would be an exercise in futility (as would EVERY other game like it). It's a simple matter of knowing who is a target and who is not. It's not a puzzle game, it's an action game. If it becomes a puzzle it has failed completely. The question you need to ask is not "How can I change the game so that guy doesn't see me" but rather "how do I react now that I know he HAS seen me?"

Oh, and if you don't want to be spotted stay under the trees. They hide your icon.

*= that is, if you saw them at all -- not counting camo, stationary deployments inside buildings, etc)

P.S. tank crews were scared to death of attacking planes for good reason. They could be killed by 'em. Whether or not they WERE killed is another matter, it was a very real threat. Think about that the next time you don't want to be "bothered" by planes attacking your tank.

Krusty, I agree. Nobody said, "Remove the friendly tank icons!" I figured that would still stick around considering in this game you can't tell friend from foe. The only thing we want removed is GV icons of enemy units. It means if a pilot wants to kill a ground target, he's gonna have to do some searching instead of coming within 3K and looking for red ID tags.

3.0K? Really? I swear, even with shift F4, I cant see the damned red tags under at least 2.0K. And is only under 1.0K when I can tell which way the damn things pointing.

What your graphic sliders set at? All the way left??
