The banter on channel 200 (was actually channel 1 that could not be de-tuned). Was in the early early going I think a little more civil than it is now. But I think the community was, by virtue of the fact that it was much smaller then, more close-knit than it is now. A lot of people who were playing Aces High back in the beta days were transplants from Warbirds or even AW, so a lot of people already knew each other.
I think the pricing structure contributed to, when you're charging 2/Hr or in AH1's case $30/mo your target market is going to be the enthusiasts, the guys who want to be ww2 fighter pilots so bad that they gladly pay monthly phone bills in the hundreds of dollars. At $15/mo. you attract much more casual gamers, but you also attract a lot MORE people. When the pool gets bigger, when you cast a bigger net, yes you end up with more fish but you increase the number of fish you have to throw back as well.
(for the record I was really happy when they lowered the price, as I was a poor starving college student at the time.
