I remember his post where he announced the change of his name. I was thinking, 'there's hope for this guy yet;' but the change was merely from oAdonaio to Adonai.

HAHAHAHA so he was an oXXXXo guy! :rofl

Awhile back I had taken a break. When i came back to AH every time I killed one of those guys, and I do mean every time.....I got a PM telling me how lame I was, or what a dweeb I was....or what a n00b I was. :rofl

This sure explains all the smack talk on 200. :D

I've seen it translated as "Lord of Armies" or "Lord of the Host." (EDIT: Checked around a little, and found I remembered incorrectly. Adonai itself was a substitute for the unpronounceable name of God, YHWH -- since traditionally it was considered sinful to speak the Name itself. Not being quite so picky, Christians threw some vowels in and transliterated YHWH into Yehovah, or Jehovah. While I thought Adonai itself meant "Lord of Hosts," that term was "Adonai Sabaoth." That should fulfill our daily quota for trivia, I'd think.)

However, back to the player -- I don't think he planned any deep meaning here. On first bumping into Adonai in the MA I made a comment about the handle, but it turns out he thought it meant something completely different. As I recall, he didn't even have the originating language right, much less the meaning.

Your correct on this, my first impression of the user name was Greek God or some reference to it, only later from certain religious players I realize the name was ment for something else.
Interestingly enough I still have not found the actual meaning for the word Adonai other then it refers to jewish word for "God", in this sense I never really changed it believing "Adonai" was not attacking anyone in particular racially or religiously.

And did I not tell you I understood your reasons for the name being Offensive, and offered to apologise on country channel?

Edit: Think you pm'ed me not sure if it was country or private which we discussed this.

Adonis is the Greek deity you were thinking of. :)

Just a suggestion, but if that's what you were intending to name yourself after, why not change it to that? :)

Entering a grey zone here, IMHO. And it's a zone that isnt about Adonai anyway, but about handles -- so it probably doesnt belong in this thread.

Names with obscene references, or ones that are societally unacceptable (like HITLRwzRITE, or ZklonB) are nobrainers for banning. When a handle could offend someone, well, where do you draw the line? What if a vegetarian complained about MEATwad? (The name, I mean....) Or a bird lover about SHawk, or a Native Ameican about Redskin1? Where does "being offended" become the individuals problem, and not HTC's??

I know we've had a "Jesus" in the past, but I don't know if he left or had to change his name.  It seems to me that if indeed the handle "Jesus" were banned, it stands to reason that other modern religions' names for God should go on the list too. Allah, Adonai, Buddah, Krishna, Kali...(Shoot, with the darn polytheists where does that stop even? )

Why should I have to detune 200 just for one or two bad apples? If you ask just squelch, I do but I sometimes forget and it's a pain having to .squelch the same people over and over.

They are the ones who should have to detune 200 and by HT, not the majority of the community that treat each other with a little respect as it should be. Little banter is fine, but constant whining, insults and degrading remarks towards others isn't.

hehe, us rooks r probably the #1 pickers, but allison, shes a nit, and she picks ALL the time. i have only been killed by her cuz of a pick, i have never had a 1-1 w/ her, and i sometimes wonder if she has any skills in a 1-1, or if she prefers picking. that was irrelevant, but adonai being my sqddie, i dont mean to be mean adonai, but he does talk a lot of trash, so do i, but adonai is a good pilot.

For me, it is a very simple distinction. 'being offended' by remarks about one's nature is a case for HTC. To be brief, if it's racial or something that said offended person cannot change about their existence then I would consider it up for review by HTC.

Offending people's beliefs is different altogether and should be the individuals problem. Beliefs can be changed, they are not an inherent quality of the individual. Expecting people to respect your choices and decisions (and thus beliefs) is unreasonable.

I talked to Adonai just after he changed his name and his explanation of his name was exactly this: "Adonai is greek for God of the sky".

It would seem he has his origins mistaken but his intention was certainly not sinister.

To be honest, I think taking offense to comments about one's god or gods is childish and petty.

Remember the Islamic response to that Danish cartoon? Absolute rubbish. Getting pissy over bibical references is of the same nature. It's not the same thing but it's the same line of thought.
