Look. As I said I'm not an Obama supporter.
But I do defend what his wife said.
Consider this.
Your family was beaten down and enslaved for a few hundred years.
Then were set "free" and then essentially get pissed on for the next hundred years and treated worse then 4th class citizens.
In spite of serving, fighting (for a while not even that)and dyeing for their country they still do not get treated as equals either by law or deed.
With few exceptions get only the lowest paying jobs, forced to use different
entrances, bathrooms, water fountains then the rest of the population.
Then finally 100 years after being "set free" Your family is legally granted equal status. They can finally start to attempt to dig their way out of the poverty induced by the lack of equality.
In spite of the social programs in place to help them 40 something years later they hear a lot about how your family can make it. But you don't see a lot.
Your family is still among he lowest paid. A large portion of your family is still impoverished.
Exactly what reason do you have to be proud of your country?
Or your family for that matter?
Then a close member of your family climbs the ladder. Gets pretty high too.
Elected to congress. And your proud of them for being able to do so.
Then that member decides to try and reach for the top rung.
And you see people not just from your family supporting them. But a lot of other families of differing backgrounds as well.
Including people of backgrounds who just 40 something years ago wouldn't have even allowed your family member walk in through a front door lat alone reach for the highest rung.
Your going to tell me that you aren't going to have a new found pride in your country?
She's right to feel that way.
most of us do not understand it because our families have never had to deal with it.
Also consider this. a few weeks ago I was in a discussion with a black man about racial issues..
I was surprised to find we agreed on a lot of the same things that aren't exactly complimentary to much of the black community. Including the using the "Because I'm black" cop out
But he did put out a point of view I had never considered before.
I was talking about where my various family members had come from. Spain, Ireland,Germany, etc etc.
He said "At least you know where your from."
Imagine what a mindFk that must be. Most of us can trace with pride our ancestry back in a lot of cases to specific towns hundreds of years ago.
The best most blacks can say is they can trace if back a few hundred years to Master (insert name here)
I agree its not an excuse any more then "because I'm black" is an excuse anymore in most cases.
but its gotta play with your head.
Look at the silver lining in all this though.
Lets say he does get elected.
The excuse of "because Im black" is going to be far far less a reason not to succeed.
But rather he will be a perfect example of what a "person of color" CAN do if they are willing to put forth the effort it takes to succeed.
No more excuses.
