Favorite Aces High Moments??
« on: February 20, 2008, 02:57:29 AM »
Mine would have been shooting my first 262 down.  Was flying the "old" spit 9 back in AH 1.  This guy dove at me, i pulled up, and hoed the guy!! lol.  Dont remember his ID but i got some unpleasant PMs on how Hoeing wasnt dogfighting and i cheated and this and that....Oh yeah, forgot to tell ya, he fired first! lol

Another one of mine would have been just after the B-24 was added.  All over bishland people were screaming on how this huge Knight raid was bombing a couple fields, so, i upped a 110 with rockets.  I couldnt catch them, but followed dar to the base they were landing at.  Just as i got there, about 10-15 flights were in the process of landing, some were already on the runway.  I selected my rockets and fired them from 2k out.  With the 4 rockets alone, i ended up with about 8 or so kills, then i swooped in with my guns blazing!! I ended up lighting up another 5 or 6 bombers on one pass.  I was SO excited about it i looked back behind me to see how many were still there, and BAM....  I ran smack dab into a tree!! lol....

I curse my luck sometimes!!

What are some of your most memorable Aces High moments or fights???

Best moment- Tie between attacking an escorted Buff raid (6 or 7 flights of B-17s escorted by about a dozen P-51s) in a 109G6R6 and surviving with 3 kills and no damage; and landing 11 in a P-51B in the LW arena. Sweetest part of landing the 11 was that the night before I'd gotten 10 and got run down by a Spit as I tried to get home with about 5 minutes of gas and no ammo left. Felt like payback :)

Favorite moment was a low fight between us in the 4th and an intercepted 190 raid. Everyone else dove in and mixed it up, but I had a hunch that there were more, so I stayed high and watched for backup. A late D9 came streaking in about 5K below me- rolled over and bounced him. Surprised him so bad that he spun in smoking all the way from about 12K to the water. Used the speed from the dive to tear in and clear a few 6s and whack the last runner whod tried to sneak out. We got the whole flight with no loss and the fight (from contact to last splash) lasted less than 1:30. Felt liek a real late-war mixup off the coast of Germany, was a blast.

The last kill of that fight is where this screenshot came from.

The 9-11 memorial flight.

Don't think there's been that many planes in such a small area that weren't trying to shoot each other.

Usually any night or event where all the pieces fell into place...

When I won a 6v1 in a P40E on the pizza map.  I was unstoppable that night. :)

When I bagged 12 kills in one frame of the 2nd BoB scenerio flying with the Assassins in 110s.

Massive furballs on the 10k A1 map between A13 and A15 (north northwest of A1, beyond the canyons).  This is where I learned to fight.  I'd grab just about any crate and suck horribly.  Eventually that paid off when one night, I suddenly found myself peaking and bagging many kills with very little deaths.  Something clicked, and I never really attributed my success to any specific focus... I began to think less and just react.

There are many more, but those above really stick out.

Almost forgot the joy of this little furball we stirred up back when I was in the 80th. I think it was Dan, Shuff and me, picked a field and started picking them off as they tried to climb out at us. Within about 30 minutes, it turned into this- and this was just the section that was in view as I was heading back in after getting shot down. Was one of the most intense furballs I've ever been part of, and it all started with 3 or 4 P-38 sticks out lookin for a "good time".

My favorite moment was back in my knit days spent a week or so getting manhandled by everyone I encountered but, one name kept coming up.

                                                        YUCCA

I wanted to kill him soooo bad.. finally I was fighting over tank town in a p51D and I noticed a P47N doing some amazing acrobatics and I realized it was him.. I dove in just as he peaked on a climb out.. started shooting at 800 out and blew him out of the sky.

I screamed for joy all the way home.
Two weeks later I lost my first ever taken up 262 to him

:furious

He was one hell of a stick.

Anybody still have the film of the fight with Yucca dropping his gear, forcing the overshoot, bouncing off the ground, swerving around a tree, and shooting down a Spit within about 5 seconds?

That is one of the all-time most amazing moves I've seen successfully pulled off in a sim.

Every film I saw with YUCCA in it was jaw-dropping.  I especially remember one where he flew through a hangar, made a sliding right hand turn around a column of flame that was probably a fuel storage tank, and elude his pursuers.

The 9-11 memorial flight was done in '03.  oOSTREAM14Oo made a film of it but have no idea if it's still posted somewhere.

my free trial and I upped a Hurri I to intercept some inbound lancs (hadnt shot a buff before that, or flown a hurri.) tried to remember what attacks look like in war movies, so climbed to 1k above them off their 4 oclock and dived in.

5 or 6 slashes later the outer 2 lancs were down and the lead lanc had no rear gun. unfortunately I didnt have any ammo left either, and then I remembered an interview with a BoB pilot who had run out of ammo while intercepting a dornier:
"I was looking at his tail section thinking 'that looks pretty flimsy' and decided to try to slice through it with my wing - the Hurricane was a tough aircraft"

the fuselage had taken a few rounds already so I thought what the hell and dived at 45deg just right and infront of his tail. bang! I look behind me to see the lanc and its tail heading off in different directions. the hurri didnt feel great but still had 2 wings so I headed home. damage check revealed no guns, gear, flap or aileron on my left wing, so I left the gear up and ditched on the runway.

1st Hurri sortie, 1st buff kill, 1st succesful ditch, 1st "landed kills" on the text buffer and a historical engagement thrown in too :D that was the moment I decided to subscribe. I also did a little googling and found the name of the BoB pilot - I have my callsign because of this sortie :aok

Was in DGS scenario - escorting B-17s deep into Germany; primary target was clouded over so we pressed on to the secondary.   Fuel was a real concern- the intermittent attacks by small gaggles of 109s and 190s had forced us to drop our tanks early.    Short icon ranges used in a scenario really add to the tension, too.

We stuck with the bombers though and fought our way out; I landed with 22 gals left and I think Stalls had 3 gals left.    Wish I had recordings of the radio traffic, the bomber group commander was just excellent.   The squad and intergroup messages sounded completely authentic.   Felt like being in a WWII movie with an unscripted ending.

While flying my C47 around an enemy airfield in an attempt to capture it, I was spotted be a set of B17's attempting to land there. They headed toward my goon, turrets blazing as I flew underneath them. The pilot obviously was so intent on shooting me down that he slammed his entire flight into a hillside. After taking the base, I landed my "3 victories in a C47."

Another moment I remember was when I hosted a Stuka mission. As we were climbing out, we were spotted by enemy A/C, one of which was a Spit16. The Spit dove in on DOWfog's Stuka. Fog of course got in the tailgun and fired back, and just the right lucky shot obliterated he Spit. I remember the enthusiastic WTFG's!!:aok

One time when I went Knights we were flying around trying to kill this last 109 from a raid. The last thing said on vox was "Check 6 ******", and that was about 5 minutes ago. Then someone (I wish I remember who) just comes out and says very casually "That guy's so ugly, he must have been hit by an ugly stick." The way he timed it and the way he said it was hilarious! :rofl

It always fun when TUFDOG has time to play and does the Vilkas Call. If you're in the Gruppe Outlaws squad, you know what I mean. :D :lol
