We took off with 75% and leveled at 25k then pulled throttle back to 33-35"MP for the lead planes. We got real close and tryed to protect each other without killing ourselfs.

Yep thats pretty dam historical.

most fun ive had in game, cant wait for CT. its very strange how people get annoyed by this action. I had a arguement with one squadie about it, one person on country channel and now this on the forums. if you dont like bomber missions dont up for them (like most already do).

for me, its what i want to see more in this game, both from inside a bomber, and from inside a fighter. Proper bomber formations, formations etc. 26k is "extreme" side but i guess with 163s its totally unfair anyway.

AAtalen, Olds and filth etc have done great bombing campaigns before and i hope they keep going. 71st are going to try it, but only 5 turned up for our first mission.

Talon: somehow (we had a lot of BAD location reports) the bombers snuck past me, I was too close to the edge of the map. I came up behind the stream. Hate to break it to you son, we were at 25k and 35 manifold from the first target to the last ( about 2 sectors). And guess what..we all died. Dio you hear us whining? No, because we had fun. Maybe you need to look up the folks that shot us down and get some training from them.

Thank you everyone . I try to make the missions i run enjoyable and fun, since the climbout on bomber raids are terribly boring. As for the ranks, i did my job. If your complaining about the raid, then my mission is half completed.

If i make you mad because the bombers was at 25k, or you were shot down because you couldn't roll a La7 to intercept, then my job is half completed. We did put a good hurting on knights last night, and we whacked numerous aircraft that opposed us.

Anyhow, We are planning another raid, so stay tuned .

Raids in early,mid, and ava the 18-20k alt for missions is fine, but in LW where u know most will be in 163s near target, you have to be 25k+.

Anyone who says different needs to fly a buff alongside in one of these raids.

FYI: I'm not "posting mad because I was shot down" -- I was not shot down. I flew off and had a fight or two over an airfield then landed. However I still did not enjoy your 100+ plane formation (counting drones).

Filth: I know about 163s. My strat bombing mission hours before yours ran into them as well, but I made it out okay. And we were only at 19k. I know a couple of others survived the 163s, but we were a small raid (5 bomber pilots only) with few escorts. We had over half a dozen 163s on us all at one time. Same map, only on the bish front.

They are not the end all, be all of bomber killers. Lethal sure, ultimate excuse to fly at (say) 30k, no.

Still don't know where you get 30k.

And if your not getting shot down by 163's near the HQ, your being attacked by noobs who have never flown one before. Its a regular occurance for us to get shot down en mass by these . So much so we avoid that area like a toxic waste zone. And we fly bombers pretty much exclusively.

Just checked the film. AATalen (lead bomber and my intended target

) and most of the buffs were at 25k and making 234 mph. There were also a few formations of bombers at just under 28k, but none higher than that. I attacked them right as they were dropping on their first target. IIRC bombers on raids deep into Germany typically flew at 25-30k, while missions hitting closer targets, such as France, were usually several thousand feet lower. I believe historical speeds en route to target were around 150 IAS, which equates to about 225 TAS at an altitude of 25k. IMO the bombers in this mission were operating in a historical manner.

Apparent bomber altitudes can be deceiving, due to the fact that the horizon is well below the nose when flying level at high altitude. This can sometimes make co-alt targets appear to be higher than you when in fact they are the same altitude or even slightly lower.

I had no problem intercepting the buffs. I took a Ta152 up to 35k and loitered over the strats which I knew they would be attacking. Dove in at over 500mph and took down 2 B-17s and a P-51 escort.

Well, the thing is, to make an accurate drop you cant be flying any faster than that because you want +/- 0 lift when you drop or it will throw off the bomb site. We generally use an SOP of 35 man full rpm which gives the relative speed you noted. And we generally use this setting in level flight to help with formations. Overlapping fields of fire is one of our only defense other than our escorts. And this game models that very well.

And generally we can always be found at 20- 25K. Historically , from talking to some who were actually there, flight opps based the bombers operating altitude to the aount and type of flack that was in the area. More ack, they were up high , less, and they were lower. This has also been documented time and time again. If they would turn the ack up to where you could just about walk on it, it would fit in some instances. The caveat to that is that it would also need to damage friendlies at that alt as well as most times enemy aircraft would not follow the bombers into it. Now that would be cool.

We do this every Tuesday at 7PM PST

We have never heard anyone complain about wasting resources. We usually get offers from other fighter squads to escort us because we tend to tip the darbar in a sector and bring the battle to us.

They are usually very fun missions. Way to go on getting this off the ground.

The trouble is Krusty, we are talking a 30 plane raid or so. The 163 effect is relative to the size of the mission. Most times you wont see alot of them with smaller raids. Big raids, thats all you see. The guys in the buffs dont want to be shot down 5 miles from target anymore than the 110 guy wants to climb to 30k. Like I said, the 163s are a given, so if you can keep above the rest, and only have to worry about the 163s (that will be there) why not do it.

Talens mission was 25k with a another box a lil higher.

Back when I did missions in the AvA we planned them with the enemy. They liked us low, we wanted high, we comprimised at 18k or so. But we didnt have jets and rockets to deal with. And, if the guy in the 163 is 1/2 a pilot, he can be the be all end all rather quickly for the bomber pilot.

If you're patient, you can ferry a 163 to a front-line base with a series of hot-paddings (keep it slow, skid stays on--lil tricky to maneuver onto hotpad)
