He was WRONG. And war is NOT chivalrous. It's a dirty, nasty, terrible business. And that incident was over in one night, actually in an hour or so. He didn't say anything that stopped it, he just said he felt it was wrong. Why was he WRONG? Because unless you crush an enemy like that completely, and destroy their will to fight, from private to dictator, you'll be fighting them again. And again. Until you DO crush them.
