Skuzzinator why is my computer...uber?

After my last upgrade I have suffered nary a frame drop in any map.  Even the most crushing AvA maps now do nothing to my framerate, it's a solid 60fps all the time.

My question, is it the multi core cpu that helped, or video card?  I've noticed several games use the cores more efficiently, I didn't realize how broken AMD's implementation was...(maybe I just didn't use the right combo of fixes and/or enchantments.)



Then:
Athlon 64 X2 6000+
3GB of ram
x1950XT 256mb of ram

Now:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
4GB of ram (of course just a wee over 3gb realized)
3870 512mb of ram

X1950 is a low-to-mid range video card. Sure it's decent, so is my card, but it's not great. On top of that the AMD was a far cry from the Core2Duo, and you went and got one of the best of those that's available.


It's a combination of one of the BEST video cards around (3870) and one of the BEST CPUs around (Q6600)

In general, you are light years ahead of your old hardware.

i thought the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra was the best on the market right now?????? no i dont want to buy it if its not.

Republic, we have so much in common here. I went from an amd 6000+ to an E8400 3 gig machine and wow, the difference. Plus, have not been booted since. I use an 3870 in the AMD and purchased an 3850 for the new machine. Only 2 gigs of ram here but I am thinking of bumping to 4 gigs. My machine will actually handle 8 gigs, (Stupid MS).

Anyway, that machine sounds great!

It still is.  But I'm sure its days are numbered with Nvidia starting to roll out the 9xxx series.

thats very true but i think that it will last me for a good 5 or so years:D


Just a random question i have upped my memory to three gigs of ram why is it only showing 2????? if ya need the Dxdiag report i will be more then happy to post it.

I think you need 64bit windows to make use of more than 2gig... or is it 3? Cant remember.

-edit- Could be some bios setting too

Windows 32bit will not recognize more that 4 Gigabytes of system-wide RAM. That includes system RAM, video card RAM, the little sound card RAM, ect.

Some motherboards (I thought only older ones) require matched pairs of RAM in the matching channel slots. Might be what's up in your case.

in order a program can use more than 2 gb of ram you neede to modify the boot.ini file.
It happens to me in a SQL server with 3gb, SQL didn't want use more than 2gb until we modify the file.
Make a search about it and will find exactly how it is done
