La-7
« on: March 20, 2008, 09:39:23 AM »
I personaly think it is one of the best planes in the game:
It is fast
It climbs fast
and my favourite think:
It's guns are at the nose which makes it easier to aim

there is only one problem: ammo

any other problems you know of?

LgAy-7
i find the nose guns harder to aim as the nose is large and hard to see over when pulling lead
also, as evl said, crap armor compared to something like a P40. also, poor fuel economy
pluses are acceleration, speed, climb rate, good turner.
i use em only when my base is  under attack from a mission and i need speed
they accelerate after take off very well and get to 300mph very quickly

lol ghost, one thing great when you are a Yak pilot is that you get used to very few ammo...like "WHOAAA that 109 got 200 rounds in the cannon ! l"

BTW the la5 and la7 with twin cannons got more rounds per gun, thus a longer firing time, you may want to try it.

I benefited noticably from spending a lot of time in the 109 K4. 65 rounds of cannon makes you pay a lot of attention to how your gunnery works.

Provided you can apply that to other calibre weapons effectively, your ammo usage will be far more economical than someone who learned to shoot in a P51 or P47 where you have thousands of rounds to play with.

Oh Bull, 75% of the the Spit that I am merging with is tryin to go for the Hoe.  Luckily I have a rudder and ailerons to avoid, or sometimes I comply with there intent.

Back on topic, the LA is a great, I think it has plenty of ammo, it will cut things in half, but get close and don't waste ammo on snap shots.  It seems a little slow to pull through in the top of a loop.  If you get in trouble you can get away from about anything.  Watch out though there might be a Corsair around, good LA killers.

Yeah, it's also the plane that you don't need skill to fly and kill too...

LA7 is not an easy plane for noobs, other than hit and run, because it packs on speed too easily, requires throttle work, and it IS an energy fighter compared to the ubiquitous Spits and N1Ks, after all.  And since the patch, it seems to actually have the sort of accelerated snap stall you'd expect out of a plane with this weight-to-power ratio, as opposed to its former handling, which was strangely benign. (Patch has eliminated the bad views though, with thinner frames it now has a claim to pretty darn good all-around vis.) Spits, Hurris, and N1Ks will always be easier for noobs to fly in furballs, base defense, etc.

That said, the problem with the plane is that in experienced hands it absolutely out-classes all the other LW high-speed E fighters at typical MA alts. The 190s, 109G/Ks, P-51s, P-47s, and Typhoon literally have no decisive advantages over it down in the weeds where the fighting usually is. (Earlier, using a combo of small-yo-yos, throttle, and flaps, I was able to stay more or less saddled behind a turning Spit16 in an LA7, and eventually shoot it down, takes awhile with my gunnery. Doubtless the pilot was probably inexperienced, but that is still crazy turning performance in a plane that will also go 380 mph on the deck.)

Something that basically renders five important families of LW aircraft obsolete under typical MA conditions seems abit extreme. Fortunately, it seems that once pilots gain experience, they usually do not fly the LA7 beyond desperate base defense. But there is no guarantee that the cultural bias against the LA7 will always be sufficient bulwark.

If I get HOd in a 39 or K-4, I HO right back. Those taters make them rethink their decision... on the way to the ground.

This thread is degenerating quickly. :lol

I see people try to HO with every aircraft regularly, it doesn't make a difference what they fly.  The only ones who are really hurting themselves are the Spixteen pilots because they can so easily turn angles without bleeding e, why risk it?

Anyway, there's far too much whining about the La-7.  Sometimes I see 5-6 plane furballs with nothing but spixteens.  I'd love to see a couple La-7s in there for variety sometimes.
