HTC: We getting beer-carrying drop tanks soon?
« on: February 28, 2001, 12:58:00 PM »
It was hard to keep anything cold at a remote jungle airbase. Of course, Americans need their beer COLD.

From "Fire in the Sky: Air War in the South Pacific" by Eric M. Bergerud, quoting P-38 pilot Joel Paris:

"When we had the '38s we had a 300-gallon external fuel and baggage tank, and they'd throw open the door on that thing and fill it with beer. We'd take it up to 40,000 feet and fly around for 15 or twenty minutes or so and get it freezing cold and haul bellybutton back to the field.  Everbody had a cold one."

I have a specially modified "drop tank" on my Jug complete with an auto-feed system.  It's basically a slightly more aerodynamic keg O' Guiness.

Opportunist USAAF pilots, always lagging behind!

Here's a picture of me on my weekly visit to Anchor Steam, stocking up for another squad night!

Hey.. the germans did that too..
I don't remember what page it was on, but somewhere in the book "The War Diary of Helmut Lipfert" it tells about someone having his 109's drop tank full of beer.

Heck, in Korea
"the 80th Squadron [Headhunters] went so far as to cut doors in a spare set of wingtip fuel tanks to carry booze from its rear base at Itazuke to its forward base at Suwon.  According to Pilot Dean Price, 'Our F-80s didn't have enough fuel to make it from K-13 (Suwon) to Itazuke without tip fuel, so we'd land at Pusan to refuel.  On the trip back we'd load the tips with rice beer, usually Asahi, and land again at Pusan for fuel for the trip home.  You could get about four cases of beer in each trip. AFter about three trips, we'd have enough for a squadron party' "
