I get into the office this morning and start working on some projects I need to have completed by the end of the week. As I'm working away, my department head calls me in his office. First thing he says is, "You're not in trouble but...", and then I had flashbacks to my time at SOE. Every mass layoff session at SOE was always started by the manager calling you and saying, "You're not in trouble but...".
So I sit down on the couch and then my manager walks in and takes a seat and then the president of our North American operations comes in and also sits down. Crap, now I know I'm getting my walking papers. Explains why my co-worker and good friend refused to look me in the eye when I came in for work, lucky bastard felt bad he got to keep his job while I lost mine.
My dept. head clears his throat, looks at the president and my manager and says, "You're not in trouble but...". I close my eyes and think, damn and I just bought a new car and engagement ring and kind of tune everything out while I try to process the information. When I start paying attention again, I hear, "...congratulations Jose, you deserve it." I'm thinking, these twisted stunninghunks, telling me I deserve to be laid off then my manager sees the confused look on my face and explains again that even though the company is restructering and laying some employees off, my position is secure and I'm getting a raise and promotion but unfortunately my co-worker was being let go.
Might sound like a salamander but while I'm bummed my buddy got let go, I'd be a lot more bummed if it was me.
