Thought I was going to get my walking papers today...
« on: April 01, 2008, 04:45:29 AM »
I get into the office this morning and start working on some projects I need to have completed by the end of the week.  As I'm working away, my department head calls me in his office.  First thing he says is, "You're not in trouble but...", and then I had flashbacks to my time at SOE.  Every mass layoff session at SOE was always started by the manager calling you and saying, "You're not in trouble but...".

So I sit down on the couch and then my manager walks in and takes a seat and then the president of our North American operations comes in and also sits down.  Crap, now I know I'm getting my walking papers.  Explains why my co-worker and good friend refused to look me in the eye when I came in for work, lucky bastard felt bad he got to keep his job while I lost mine.

My dept. head clears his throat, looks at the president and my manager and says, "You're not in trouble but...".  I close my eyes and think, damn and I just bought a new car and engagement ring and kind of tune everything out while I try to process the information.  When I start paying attention again, I hear, "...congratulations Jose, you deserve it."  I'm thinking, these twisted stunninghunks, telling me I deserve to be laid off then my manager sees the confused look on my face and explains again that even though the company is restructering and laying some employees off, my position is secure and I'm getting a raise and promotion but unfortunately my co-worker was being let go.

Might sound like a salamander but while I'm bummed my buddy got let go, I'd be a lot more bummed if it was me.

Oh boy Ack, I know that feeling... like a bunch of rocks in the pit of your stomach... Congrats on the promotion  :rock.

reminds of about 7 years ago when I first started my current job... I had been here for about 5 months... one morning I took a break and went downstairs for a smoke and a cup of coffee... I was gone about 10 minutes... came back upstairs, walked into my area and all the cubicles were empty, 25 some odd people just gone... I went to my desk and checked my email... no clues there...a couple of minutes later BIL comes out of the main conference rooms, walks over to me and says I need to be in the conference room with him... I go in and theres about 40 people or so in there, some from my department, some from other areas and my boss with a serious face... nobody's talkin much, few whispers...The head of HR sticks her head in the room, nods at my boss and I'm sure the hammer is about to fall... he says "Ok, If you're in this room, you still have a job"... relief and pain at the same time...  20 years in the Air Force I never experienced anything like that... a few friends lost their jobs that day... and 2 acquisitions and company name changes and 4 rounds of layoffs and I'm still here...

I'll second that (or is it third now?)

Another good reason to never work for someone else.

When I graduated college I had a choice.  I could go into the family business (wrought iron furniture manufacturing) or what I really wanted to do, which is work in the gaming industry.  I knew that making the choice I did, I wouldn't have the freedom I would have if I worked in the family business but on the other hand, I would be doing something I enjoy.  I'd rather be happy working in a field I love instead of just working for a living.

Sometimes one has to make sacrifices I guess.

Oh, God getting up every morning in a suit and sitting in a little office, listening to someone else tell you what to do....... :uhoh When you work for a company and you have to worry about losing your job at any second, it would make me wonder why i'm doing it in the first place.

Thats why i hope my music career goes well.....

Wait why am i in Mech Engineering in college again??

Congrats AK, i'm glad you made it.
