Anyone using a DLP as a monitor?
« on: April 05, 2008, 10:29:28 PM »
So what could be better than a 50" HDTV as a monitor?  Yeah..a 52, 56, 61 or a 70 inch.

But besides that obvious point...has anyone plugged AHII into a DLP?   Now I can my connect computer and use the TV as a montor via the DVI input and thats cool...but I want to use it to play AHII ;-)  (Greedy ain't I ;-P)

So there seems to be a problem with getting this done.  Apparently AHII does "something" to the monitor prior to starting like sending a resynch or something.   I noticed on my old NEC Multisync it "clicked" right after the AHII icon is clicked and then the login screen would pop up.  Well,  when hooked up to the DLP DVI interface,  AHII "terminates with errors" and never starts.

My card see's my Samsung DLP just fine....everthing runs on it...like 3dmark06 and it even "senses the system and resets the CPU tests to 800x600 on the DLP....but not  AHII!  GRrrrrrrr.

Any ideas welcome...and yes...the wife already said NO!!!! to the idea of a shinny new 52" LCD with HDMI.   So I have to work with what I have.

Well I figured it out....I have to load up some Samsung LCD Drivers for the video.   I choose the 205BW Digital/Analog drivers since I have that disply.  It worked!  I now have a 50" DVI Display running at 1280x720.   Unfortunately, the top and bottom are cropped but it still looks kewl.

Go to your video card control panal.  Turn scaleing off but remain at your normal resolution.  Launch the game and at the wecome screen click video on your clipboard.  Select a resolution that gives you the full verticle screen at a 4:3 ratio.  Go into the game and you will have the full vertical game (not cropped) but you will have black, unused screen on each side.  I do this on my 22" LCD and it works out great.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

I started with a  50" 720p RPLCD 5 years ago, then a 58" 1080p DLP and currently use a 60" 1080p SXRD.  I have the video card set to output 1920x1080p but set the game to output 1280x1024.  I can choose 2 different black sidebar settings or stretch it horizontally through the TV controls with no vertical cropping.

I've been playing with this the last couple of nights.  I found a Samsung LCD driver that supports a 50" LCD so I installed that one in place of the 20" LCD driver.  I figured the scaling might be better with comparable sizes.   I now have resolutions up to 19??x1080!   However the old Sammy (5 years old) will only display 1280x720.  If I go higher....the screen displays but not anything "outside" the 1280x720 window.   I can "pan" around the screen and see the full desktop at any resolution (which is cool...but not what I was hoping for) but I cant "squish" it all into the display.

On the video card (8800GT) setup it sees the Sammy's Native display as 1280x720.    So even if I run 1024x768...it still clips off the bottom of the screen (which it will pan to if I pull the mouse down there).    So now I need to somehow convince the wife that we need a new 50" TV that supports 1080P!   I would go bigger, but there is just no more room in the wall.  I have already gutted and rebuilt that wall twice now....she will go ballistic if I tell her I have to do it again ;-)

Solid cement crawlspace behind it....cant go lower....floor joists above it...cant go higher :frown:  Hey wait!

You should run your desktop at 1280x720.  I think the newer  Nvidia drivers have an adjustment to make your desktop fit that resolution if it overscans.  My ATI drivers have a simple slider that adjusts the desktop size to fit my display's native res.  It actually creates a custom resolution within the 1280x720 res.

Then you should be able to set AH @ 1024x768.  I think that is what I did with my old 720p display IIRC.

OT-Too bad bout the Softails.  I always liked them.

Exactly why I don't use a front projector for my PC monitor.

Oh that thought has crossed my mind once or twice!!  Maybe put in a nice 10x8 screen that unrolls from the ceiling ;-)

Our school has a projector that works perfectly in full light. Interestingly enough, the wall where it "touches" has been painted light blue; maybe that helps?

getting a proper screen will make a world of difference over just a projector on a wall.

It may look like it works perfectly when you're using desktop. But try watching a movie or a game with dark scenes (ah at night) and you'll find out you will only see a washed out pale picture where it's supposed to show black. Everything's hunky dory as long as you have high contrast images such as desktop and text.

We've played HALO 1 and 2 on it and watched numerous videos pertaining to the class ranging from TV show to training series. Looked just like a giant CRT to me. The surround sound's nice too. ;)
