That's a great book indeed.
Before Fire in the Sky Bergerud wrote one about the ground war in the same theater. Touched by Fire reads every bit as well, and gave me my first taste of the substantial Australian contributions. Never realized that the Kokoda Trail(s) battle resonates there like Guadalcanal does for Americans.
Of course, Bergerud writes with the same talent and the same attention to first person narratives that make Fire in the Sky such a good read. You'll like the ground book every bit as much as his other one!
Incidentally, I know that at one point he played AH and was active in a squad. Don't remember which one, but I remember one of his squaddies talking about it.
