Huge frame rate drop

Been playing game normally for a few years with no problems.

Computer is used mainly for E-mails and a couple games. (Doom, Rise of nations, and aces high mostly)

Since this problem started to occur, I have done everything I could find to help solve this thing. (setting max texture to 256,lowering resolution, stopping background processes etc.)

I have never had to do any of these things until the last week and a half or so. The game has always played fine. Frame rates of 50+ usually. Now rates are in teens and lower.

More often than not they are in the single digit range.

I know my video card is prehistoric, yet i've never had a problem running games (including this one) with it before.

I run Adaware/spybot s&d and others. Run Mcaffe virus scans regularly etc.

My offline games play just fine. Seems like all of a sudden I can't play my favorite one!

I am going to try and post my dxdiag here so maybe someone can notice something that may help.

Still trying to figure out how to post my Ping plotter info.

You need to be using driver version 61.77 with that video card.  Might want to check the CPU usage when the system is supposed to be idle as well.  Bring up the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and select the "Processes" tab.  Watch the CPU usage at the bottom center of the panel.  It should be at 0 percent, occasionally spiking to 1%.

Any deviation will have a severe impact on game performance.  Also note the total process count in the lower left corner.  It should be around 19 to 21.

CPU usage can be effected by external facters as well as programs.  Say you inherit an IP address from someone who was using some P2P program.  It could take days before your Internet connection will settle down.  In the meantime, your CPU would be busy telling all those inbound connection attempts to go away.

GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE AS ALWAYS!!!

However, I had the cable co. at my house this morning and they found something wrong that supposedly cut my internet strength in half or worse!!

My wife called me at work with the news this morning.

Had her (over the phone) put a Typhie on the runway and asked her to relay the frame rate to me------- 56!!!

I think I,m back in business, will find out for sure when I get home tonight.

I noticed two minor things...
1) Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor
Try and get the specific .inf file for your monitor.
2)Sound Devices

Especially with onboard sound, lower that to 3/4ers and not full.

1boner your internet connection doesn't have any effect on you fps.If your vid card is ancient,maybe a upgrade is in order.The price on all but the newest,fastest,cards has came down to a respetcable price range.I just got a Nvidia 8800 GT for a couple hundred bucks,and if you look around you can get them for even less.I hope this helps you.

Currently on a laptop and recently had a very large frame rate drop as well. I went from running 50 to 60 FPS down to 15-25. Laptop is using vista, at idle with out me touching anything on start up it is running 70 processors and a CPU usage that spikes as high as 11 and as low as 6. Any reason why I saw such a drop? Need to see my diagnostic stats?

My CPU usage right now is telling me 11% and a prosses of 38. I usualy run a frame rate of 25-30 but it has always been like that, so I realy don't worry too much about it.

I can give you my diganostics if you want to.

11% is insanely high for a Windows system.  A normal system runs at 0 to 1%.  Given the lousy granularity of the Windows Task Manager you are loosing about one third your processing power to things running in the background.  I bet the in-game 'Varanice' in the 'Net Status' looks horrible as well.
