The Alaska Experiment
« on: May 20, 2008, 09:42:51 PM »
Anyone watching this series? I am totally digging it, I'd totally pass the "cabin fever" part of it, and I think if I was put up in a cabin there I could chill... I don't know if I could do all the gutting / cleaning of the meat, but otherwise I'd do it.

Though it does seem that have to make "quests" or some crap, and I am not cool with that so to say, I'll chill in a cabin, but I won't trek for some dumb producers whim.

I tried to watch, I really did. But those people were such unbelievable, hopeless pansies that I kept rooting for Nature to cull them from the gene pool. Wusses, the lot of them. The people I choose to associate with would not only survive, but THRIVE in those conditions. I sicken myself just thinking of their unworthiness! I feel soiled from just having to face the fact that those people and My People are both considered to be verterbrates! Just recalling those few glimpses of the show makes my gorge rise! I have had nasal secretions with greater survival instincts! I can literally taste the puke in the back of my throa......well you get the idea.

I've watched it a couple of times.  It's much better than some of the other survivalist shows, mainly because of its natural setting.

They always seem to pick city folk for these "experiences".  I suppose their utter cluelessness does provide more sheer entertainment than would people who have had occasion to actually use some "primitive" and "barbaric" technologies in their everyday lives.

It was a real hoot to watch the young man turn green while having to skin and GUT the mountain goat he had killed.  How many of ya'll think that the 150 pounds of meat he got off of that animal is going to supply all the protein needs of the people in his cabin for the entire winter?

The scenery is good, but trying to convince the public that those concrete pounders could actually survive without all the back up that`s in place is ridiculous.

for the 3 of them no way... one guy said November is the coldest month, something tells me either they are clueless or they aren't staying through until spring thaw.

The entire "experiment" is only 3 months long. I think at this point in the show, there's only 1 or 2 months left. At 60 days left, splitting the goat evenly, that's around .8 pounds per person, per day, not including their veggies & whatnots. Sounds like a pretty good sized portion to me.

A year or so ago I read a book (trying to come up with the title, I'll google it directly) about a young man who made his way up in to Alaska to tough it in the wilderness. He died, of course, but it was an interesting read. If you find the premise of city folk trying to play mountainman amusing, you might enjoy that book.

Recently watched that movie hub, most depressing thing I ever saw in my life.

Plus he made many many mistakes, a couple of which were cumulative.

A Crossing a frozen river without a way back after the Thaw.

B Not enough staples, rice, beans, flour, bacon, etc.

C totally inept attempt to cure meat.
Let me put it this way, your life depends on your ability to keep meat from spoiling.
Wouldn't you have made sure your method worked, or tested it first?
Or brought salt so you could keep it from rotting while you smoked it?

D terrible timing, He walked into the bush in what looked like winter (possible late fall, or late winter)
How do you walk into anywhere and build a shelter, put away a winters supply of food that way?
Its simply not possible.  You time it to walk, float your way into the bush in springtime.
You have all summer and fall to build shelter, and stock away your winters food supply. And, if all fails and
you decide you can't make it, you can walk out before your snowed in too deep to get out.

If the kid handn't burned his money, given away his college fund. He could have gotten a float plane to drop him into a good location. He could have built a much better shelter than a metal bus. (Talk about freeze your tail off in January!)
And he could have the pilot drop supplys a couple of times a year. In short if the kid had thought he could still be alive in alaska.

Instead hes famous, dead, but famous.

I said I thought it was interesting, I never said he wasn't an idiot.

Anyway, that's a real Alaska experiment- nothing like this formulated-for-the-bovine-masses roadkill they're getting you guys to watch.

I like his shows.

I don't care much for that "Bear" guy since it was disclosed they film, go to the hotel, then go back out the next day....
