Shimmering example
« on: June 06, 2008, 05:02:23 PM »
Ok,I have not totally gotten rid of my shimmering issue even AFTER a new comp.It is actually about the same,so I looked around online and came up with some info which is a few years old,but may help someone none-the-less.

 http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t6434.html

CLICK ON THE yippie-yippie-yah-yah LINK,AND YOU WILL GET A VIEW OF WHAT really bad shimmering looks like...

Mine is not so bad, although if I do not make adjustments with N-hancer,it comes close..

Look at the country(green) part of the movie and you will get a rough idead of what it looks like flying around..

This next link,as well as the last seems to be saying that NVIDIA drivers are the cause.

http://www.rage3d.com/reviews/video/nvidia7800gt/?p=5

What I am not sure of is ,can I use the drivers they are speaking of,which have the fix on a geforce8600GT..I know sounds strange, but who knows????

Now I have read that AF(anisotropic Filtering) does not help in this game,But it helps me.Dont ask me why,but when I dont use AF,The shimmering is MUCH WORSE..

Although at this point using N-hancer,I have it to a minimum,it can still be a bit irritating..But I do not believe it is a game problem..

I'm not sure of what you are asking Falcon. Do you want to use the drivers that are meant for one vc on another?

Falcon, I went to the nvidia website. It seems that if it is a different version of the 8600 it doesn't matter. The drivers are categorized by the series (ie 7, 8, 9 etc.).

To be straight forward Falcon, the 8600 is not a very good card. Maybe someone will confirm this. I think for nvidia you have to go to the 8800 level.

Try this.  Homeboy just responded to the Falcon are we there yet post.  He had a similar issue:

Sorry, just now seeing this.
The thread you guys are talking about is here:  http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,234599.0.html

Also, the shimmering issue I was having was fixed with this setting:

Texture filtering - Negative LOD bias - Allow

I had it set to "clamped" originally.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Yea I was hoping to possibly use diff drivers, but maybe I cant..

While I realize the 8600 may not be the "BEST",the shimmering should not be happening..

heck,I did not get shimmering with my OB video chip.. :huh

Did you try the fix posted on your other thread by Homeboy?

What drivers are you using?

Is your card an Nvidia Brand card, or is it made by some other company and uses the Nvidia chipset?

If it's made by another company and using the Nvidia chipset, are you using drivers supplied by that company or are you using the Generic Nvidia drivers from Nvidia's driver download page?

If you're using the generic Nvidia drivers from their download page, you might try and older driver, and see what happens. You might also go into the Nvidia control panel and try different settings to see if any of them might fix the problem. That seemed to work for Homeboy.

Do you have another video card you can put in temporarily to see if the problem is specific to your video card or an Nvidia problem?

Falcon, I did a little research.
Try the below forum. It recommends trying different drivers. I know some of the players whenever they install new devices they also reinstall directx. I believe you can find the older drivers on the nvidia website. You can laso type the version # in google to locate them.

http://www.techsupportforum.com/gaming-forum/pc-gaming-support/246222-solved-matrix-like-shimmering-when-playing-games.html

btw, wasn't trying to insult you on the 8600. I don't play with the best vc. I'm using the ati3850. It was rated as a good card for the money. I had the 8600 btw. I took it out and replaced it with ati. I then put it in my Mom's computer. Where it is being used daily.

I hope this helps.

My 8600GT runs the game at 1024 textures & 1680x1050 resolution with all the sliders up to max at 60fps as long as I'm not in a big furball.

First, please note the "shimmering" they are talking about is not the same as "shimmering" we see in AH.

I get the little glitter/shimmer/glitches too, in AH.

But the webpage isn't talking about that. The webpage you linked is talking about the demarcation/border lines between Anisotropic filter layers (where it goes off into the distance, and gets blurrier the further it gets, you can see where the texture is split)

Secondly, please note the DATE of the article (2005) and that it says Nvidia is fixing the texture problem with Forceware beta 70-something. Please note we (today) are up to about Forceware 170-something.

It's so many versions back it's not a problem anymore.

Try the quoted fix, see if that helps:

Appreciate the reply krusty..I am familiar with the date, this is why I am so confused as to why I have it..If the shimmering they see is not what "WE" see, then what is it they have??

I have to set my AF and AA as high as I can to get rid of "JAGGIES" and "WARPAGE" of areas behind me..JAGGIES I always have on some level, and of course, only when I move..

 Thanks for the reply,

Is your vis range set to max or normal or whatever it is?  I don't ever use those so I'm not sure what keys they are.  It almost sounds like it's set to ground detail range.
