In overal, with the new patch I got an
increase of about 8fps in performance (from
an average of 28 to near 40 during flight).
But with the introduction of the P38 those
fps drop to 21-22. For example, selecting
the "Hangar View" I got the following results depending of the selected plane:
B17: 12 fps.
La5: 26 fps.
190: 25 fps.
B26: 18 fps.
P38: 14 fps.

Yesterday, trying a formation of 3 P38 the
fps dropped to 17. The same formation with
P51 gives me more than 30 fps.

Frontal view into the cockpit of the P38: 22 fps.
Frontal view into the cockpit of F4U: 35 fps.

Seeing those results I think that a graphic
detail selection menu should be very well
wellcome by a lot of users.

Note: When I talk to fps I'm refering to average fps, not extremes.

I think a LOT of this FPS drop is contributed by the spinning prop..  maybe having the option only to turn this off might help a lot already...

Not sure of that. Selecting the rear view
(where spinning props are not visible), the
fps are even lower than with frontal view.

I noticed the same right away, I was getting near 40 in the 38 untill I started buzzing two other 38s,,and I went down to low 20s..
Look at the superchargers and counter balances though...that thing has a lot of polygons...3 might just be to many for my 16meg TNT 1...Time to upgrade!

 It might be Pongo.
My frame rate seemed to be up all around last night too.
Mid 30's average. Using hi-res and with a resolution of 1280X1024 to boot.

Flying a few flights in a P-38 I was at one point in a group of about 5 P-38's attacking several enemy aircraft of which a few were P-38's also. But my PII 333, 192sdram with it's  32mb Diamond Viper V770 TNT2 Ultra handled it smoothly and no choking to say the least.
I bought the Viper for $136.00  back in October when someone posted about a sale on it - in this web board. It must be less now.

Time to upgrade or time make the graphic
detail scalable?

As far as I know TNT doesn't calculate poligons, only renders them. So, perhaps the bottleneck is in the CPU, or, perhaps, in
both. Another more complex plane = another
upgrade?

Anyway, with the current poligon number of the P38, it seems that dogfighting two of these planes will make the game umplayable, at least for me.

IMHO so perfect 3D models are secondary. In
arena, extern views are dissabled (except
for bombers), and during combat, apreciating
the 3D detail level of the enemy is almost
impossible. Of course the 3D models are
impresive when viewed with external views in
offline game. But much less detailed 3D
models will have the same visual effect
during combat increasing frame rate and
playability. (Flying P38 + 2 P38 in front +
clouds = NULL)

All of this is not only aplicable to P38,
a large formation of B17 giving no more than
8 fps is anything but playable.

Fire, explosions, smoke and debris are a much more noticeable effects during combat, and IMO they are all poorly modeled now in AH (fire?).

IMO, if HT want to keep so extra-detailed 3D
models, perfect, but please, make the detail
level configurable or change the main HT
page where "Expected System Requirements" are
described by something like:

Windows 9x
DirectX 6.1 (7.0)
GeForce DDR (agpX4 enabled) or Voodoo 5600.
Athlon 1.1Ghz or better
Joystick
Sound card and speakers
Sony's JumboTron.

I've noticed an increase of about 10 Fps but! now explosions kill my fps and they didn't before.

I totally agree with MANDOBLE.
Please let us adjust the detail level!
