MTU, packet size, ping and packet loss
« on: December 05, 1999, 07:59:00 AM »
Well, after many many microwarps back in early versions, I tried MTU speed.

My MTU was set at 1500 ! Fellow pilot advised me to change MTU to 176. It worked wonderfully, no more warps through bullet stream, nice and smooth.

However, in last week I experienced many discos, coud not connect to host quite a few times and so on. Flying was smooth though.

I changed MTU to 576 now. Now I can log anytime I like, ping is still decent, but microwarps are back

Please, does anyone have advice on the MTU settings ?

Here is what little I know:
Windows has a default MTU setting of 1500 which is mostly to be compatible with a LAN  type of connection. The packet size (MTU) being transmitted is large to send/recieve larger chunks of data. That is fine if you're on a LAN but not that great when you have a dial up connection. At the same time smaller packet sizes can also help your connection to a host because you do not need a large packet to be sent/recieved but you may need many smaller ones for quicker data changes.
The setting you chose is more optimal with a dial up connection.

I Have seen cable modem guys warp all over when they do some move when they've had MTU at 1500, when they have changed it to 576 or lower, they have been very stable.
Looks like not only dial-ups, but cable modem problem also.
