Say that to P51 pilots killed by friendly ack new years day of '45 believe we lost a few good mustang aces too.

They lost the best one of them all on Christmas day

Quote
During the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, elements of the group were moved to fighter strip Y-29, Asche, Belgium. On Christmas Eve, Preddy indulged in a game of craps and scooped the pot to win $1200, which he intended to invest in war bonds. On Christmas Day, Preddy led 10 of his P-51s on a patrol. They were vectored to a formation of enemy planes, and in the ensuing fight, though the squadron became scattered, Preddy downed two more Bf-109s. He and his wingman, Lt. James Cartee, were then vectored to an unknown number of bandits near Liege. Preddy saw a FW-190 on the deck and went after him at treetop height. As they roared over American ack-ack batteries, Preddy was hit by friendly ground fire and killed, probably by the bullets from the quad 50s.

That happened more than some would like to think.

Rod367th's father would "bring captured Japanese planes to USAAF bases".   I believe I recall him being "shot at, almost everytime."

Don't forget the Invasion of Sicily.   About 10 C-47's I believe were shot down.

I cant help but agree with the ack part, to a degree.

it shouldent hit friendlies ON THE GROUND.

more than once ive gone to an airfield under attack..  upped, and the second I hit the runway I take damage from friendly ack firing at a con on the deck.

Why wouldn't it?  It's not like bullets are selective :)

so in real life a base's ack gunners would shoot through friendly manned aircraft as they prepare to take off?

Common  practice for the Italians. I read it on Wiki.

Imagine it's January 1, 1945 and you are in an Allied fighter at any of a number of bases on the continent.  All kinds of LW fighters come roaring across the fields shooting as it's Operation Bodenplatte.  AA is firing like mad, and you are starting to roll.  A flak gun tracks a 109 racing low across the field and they are firing.  They're not looking at anything but that 109 as you cross the path between gun and 109.  You get hit by the cross fire.

I have several time been leading tanks, waiting for that next 88mm round to load, following the moving tank in my gunsight, paying no attention to anything but the tank, fired, and hit a tree right in front of my gun. Just an example.

telescopic narrow view of a tank gunner, not even remotely the same as a AA gunner's view..

find me an account of a WW2 AAA destroying a manned friendly aircraft on  the runway as its sitting still about to take off.

LOL now it has to be sitting still on the runway?

OK I'll look.  But to get started

From Bodenplatte since I used it as an example.  131 Wing airfield at St. Denis-Westrum.  "Back at the airfield the first Aa fire was sporadic since the Bofors guns had been covered to protect them from the snow.  Soon they were back in action, managing to shoot down one Spitfire in error."

More Bodenplatte  "F/L Don Gordon was also returning early when he saw many fighters near Heesch, claiming two FW190s shot down.  His aircraft was hit by the defending anti-aircraft fire and he was wounded, crashlanding south of the airfield."

Of course there is the  story of the 41st FS P39 pilot in new Guiniea who got a Zeke on his tail and couldn't shake it and ran for the ack, calling in that he was bringing the bandit right across the field.  The friendly ack promptly opened up and shot down the P39.  The pilot survived a bit banged up and not real happy
