I am dropping Verizon like a rock.  They just added a surge charge to my phone service.  They charge for NON-usage of long distance now.  This is in Texas, so it may not apply to other states.

Our home was in one of the first areas to get FIOS and I had an instant disdain for it as they are forcing the Internet connection to PPPoE.  The engineer in me just detests those kinds of short cuts.  Others will live it as they do not know any better.

This new charge is just wrong and I refuse to have anything to do with Verizon and am campaigning hard to get everyone in our district to drop Verizon as well.

I am probably not the person you want to ask about Verizon service.

Skuzzy, I looked up that protocol and the site seemed to be tilted for it. (It didn't look like Verizon's site). However, if you say it is bad I believe you. Just for my curiosity why is it bad. Is it because it is buried somehow inside the internet protocol? Sorry, Im a pure novice at this.

Wow, charged for something you are not using. What in the world!

you have brighthouse?
as you already probably know, you can get phone, standard rr and cable for 109 - throw in alittle more for turbo rr and I think you get just about the same for less. plus no long term contracts.
my experience shows verizon doesn't match brighthouse customer service in the tampabay/orlando system areas. nothing but complaints but your mileage may vary, we have them switching back to brighthouse as we pick up the termination fees they owe verizon to break their contract .. usually a couple hundred bucks ..

I have it and havent had any problems with it.

With my Mother living in Fla
And my sister living in Va

Long distance calls are not a problem.

Skuzzy,
Living in Texas I would think almost every call is a long distance call

Sorry DRED, but I do not find it funny at all that Verizon is able to charge for services not used.  Even if you use it and do not use it enough, they still charge you.

As we cannot get land line service from anyone else, we are simply dropping it.  They have a lock on high speed Internet service as well, so we will end up with either satellite or Sprint's wireless service.  Nether of which is all that great, but I'll be damned if Verizon is going to get another nickle from me.

I have Brighthouse myself here in Florida.  Must say that I do like it.  They are getting ready to install Verizon down my street in the next couple of weeks.  Think I will stay with Brighthouse.  Have heard soem stories from friends that made the switch.  Plus, Brighthouse now has service that is faster than FIOS from what I have heard.

Why do people shy away from Cable HSI? I must be spoiled, been using it since it came out and havent had any REAL problems with it.

do people try other stuff just for gimmick sake? or to test the waters, or what?

Some people don't have HSI via cable, others shy away from it because it's been traditionally oversold, such that while it's a "fatter pipe" than some other solutions, the latency can be variable, which is very poor for gaming.

Cable service is a joke in our area.  I would be better off with a satellite connection.

It seems like most people complain about how much Satellite sucks.  I have had it for a few years and i find it quite nice.  True there is a Bandwidth and bad Ping, but oh well.  I play AH with it and when i warp it's almost never much more than 10ft and i have a ping of 600-1500.  Download speeds are up to 1.5MB/s (average for me is 120-250KB/s).  Browsing speeds are good as well.  Well now that i ahve run out of things to say I am finished :D

My Cable HSI is just fine most of the time.  However, sometimes during evening hours, when many people are using the cable, I can get 50% packet loss and upload speeds as low as 14kbps.  Obviously the system is oversold and grinds to a halt when other people on the cable crank up their P2P or video downloading.
