what if we got rid of gooney birds?
« on: May 27, 2000, 09:00:00 PM »
what if we made fields capturable by land only. This would have to be in combination with a 20 minute limit on taking off from a field. IE if you take off from a field and die, you cannot instantly take off (or drive off in a vehicle) from that field. Other fields are fine, but not that one   So we could have some REAL ground assaults. Also, you should be able to bail out of your tank and use your tank crew as a troop, that way an assault of 10 vehicles could take a field without a carrier even, would be cool.

Ok Zigrat you got my attention......

That's my fave ride your talking about like it's the goon's fault for all the missed field captures?

Why do you want to remove still more realism from the game? Yes I agree provide ground vehicles which can carry troops and take fields. (Already planned I think) I'll probably drive one of them as well, but the goon would still (With fighter support) remain the quickest way to take a field. No hills to climb or drive around steady speed of 150 mph plus. At least with a goon if you get shot down you have chance to get back with another before the Ack comes back up.

I would if anything like to see the goons roles expanded. It should be able to have a choice of loadouts.
Shell crates which could be dropped near vehicles, just drive over them to pick them up. Alright a bit "Quakeish" but any other suggestions welcome.
Spares that have to be dropped within a certain distance from a damaged tank with a repair time built in, it's a real pain to drive for an hour only to have your tank disabled and have to ditch and start all over again.
Also did goons really only carry 10 troops???
Goons could also carry spares to speed up the rebuild time of captured fields. This topic could be expanded at will. The goon is currently the only option of completeing a capture and in my opinion will remain the choice of most even after the ground based troop carriers arrive.

<edit>
On the subject of forcing re planeing (Or whatever) from another field if you die. Yup, couldn't agree more. This would be benificial in many ways It would provide more "windows" for troop runs (Ground or air). It would mean that the defenders would be entering the attack from another field and therefore be at co alt (More Furball's). Attackers have to fly back to a field after being shot down currently and therefore are taken out of the fight for a while why not defenders as well. Killing an attacking pilot removes him from the fight for 10 minutes or so, killing a defending pilot removes him from the battle for about 5 seconds!. (That's why Goons' picnic in fields waiting for the "Clear" signal. and defending pilot's just "throw" everything at the cause).
<edit>

I have no illusions about where I am in the food chain, but... If the goon goes, so do I. (No I quit thread just a quick "Cya" while online).

ok mabye not get rid of gooney    but id like to be able to capture a field without any kind of "troop transport" .. what if say 3 panzers all rolled up to within 50 feet of an enemy maproom could capture. This would be real cool, IMHO.

The C-47A was able to carry 28 passengers, so it should carry about 20 paratroopers.
