Auto-pilot and compression.
« on: May 05, 2001, 10:39:00 PM »
I've noticed that when compressed, in a dive that would otherwise be fatal, use of the auto-pilot re-establishes elevator authority rapidly, thus avoiding crashing.

It seems that the "AP" is immune to compression effects, but not G effects?

Would it be possible, and is it desireable to:

Make the AP input less than full deflection stick inputs, and keep the aircraft compressed if it was prior to the AP being engaged?

The autopilot plays with the trim tabs, hence the instant ability to pull out of compression and level off. You can actually use trim to pull out of a sharp dive in a real aircraft. The problem is the autopilot simply has too much authority. Where it might take you or I 10-20 seconds to spin that trim wheel and get out, the AP does it in seconds. Sometimes IT breaks the plane! I gotta agree with you, turn down the autopilot authority at least on the elevator trim.
