In Favor Of-
Someone brought up Thomas Jefferson and his dealing with the Barbary Pirates, on the radio. Did Jefferson allow the Barbary Pirates trials on US soil for their crimes?
Using the phrase 'it is a different time now' doesn't make for a good argument since it would make everything our forefathers did, null and void.
--------------
Against-
The allegations of torture of prisoners of the United States is destroying our reputation irrecoverably and causing a great gap between us and long standing allies, not to mention eroding our high moral standards.
----------
My view-
Does anyone really think the torture of prisoners in US custody is anything new? I don't think so, only now, we have a press that isn't stifled about reporting it.
I do know this, the average person has no clue exactly what is happening and isn't in a position to make an accurate judgement, either for or against. Unfortunately, the people we have elected to make these judgements, watch over the individuals involved, and protect us- do nothing. They do nothing because they cannot agree or even compromise with one another and are too interested in slush funds and pork barrel and wish to not 'sour the source'.
Someday in the future, we'll know if the decisions of today's adminstation was a good idea. I hope I'm alive either way to see it...
