In Favor Of-

Someone brought up Thomas Jefferson and his dealing with the Barbary Pirates, on the radio. Did Jefferson allow the Barbary Pirates trials on US soil for their crimes?

Using the phrase 'it is a different time now' doesn't make for a good argument since it would make everything our forefathers did, null and void.
--------------
Against-

The allegations of torture of prisoners of the United States is destroying our reputation irrecoverably and causing a great gap between us and long standing allies, not to mention eroding our high moral standards.
----------
My view-

Does anyone really think the torture of prisoners in US custody is anything new? I don't think so, only now, we have a press that isn't stifled about reporting it.

I do know this, the average person has no clue exactly what is happening and isn't in a position to make an accurate judgement, either for or against. Unfortunately, the people we have elected to make these judgements, watch over the individuals involved, and protect us- do nothing. They do nothing because they cannot agree or even compromise with one another and are too interested in slush funds and pork barrel and wish to not 'sour the source'.

Someday in the future, we'll know if the decisions of today's adminstation was a good idea. I hope I'm alive either way to see it...

There were Barbary Pirates on the radio in Jefferson's time?

I think the definition of torture has changed over the years.  The torture methods of the dark ages did actual physical damage, they just didn't scare the hell out of those who went through it.  I doubt a magazine reporter would allow Torquemada to apply thumbscrews to get background for an article.

The poll question is 'Was it a mistake? Was it worth the price we paid?'

Yes, there is one of the first Muslim Democracies in the middle east ever. We have a good watch on Iran and there isn't some wacko-nut in control of our oil. I think that it was worth it.

Our oil?

x2

Angels - a couple of things, there are several Islamic Democracies in the world that didn't require our direct military intervention to develop.

2) it's not our oil.  It was never OUR oil.  It will never be OUR oil unless we plan on making Iraq the 51st state...

I'm impressed that at a young age you are keeping up with current events... reading the paper... watching the news.  This all makes me hopeful for our future.  :)  But keep reading bud... there's a lot more out there  :aok and while you feel informed there is always something else to learn.

But they're letting us drill for it and not the Russians or the Communist Chinese. I'd have to say that it's "ours" :D

It's just your poor luck that you weren't born 250-275 years earlier in England.
