Inactivity Timer
« on: July 08, 2008, 05:00:58 PM »
Well, i posted the following discussion in the General Forums
http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,240269.0.html
and got some decent feedback; I will attempt to assert the PROs and CONs I see most relevant

My opinion:  Implement a client 1 hour inactivity timer (based on inactivity on the client side [to avoid server load]) that would eject player from the arena.  I would request that this feature be implemented with a pop-up window that gives the user 60 seconds to terminate the log-off; should they be sitting at the keyboard (maybe reading text buffer...etc) and not causing client side activity.

Purpose:
1) During higher arena populations: To prevent excessively AFK people in arena from denying access to arena based on current server caps
2) During lower arena populations:  To avoid excessive AFK players negatively effecting ENY calculations for extended periods of time
*item 2 only true when AFK numbers are disparate between countries

Primary Downfalls:
1) Manpower to code a condition that may often have minimal effect on gameplay
2) Irritation to players who want to "reserve" a slot in an arena for an extended period of time

I have no knowledge of the difficulty this would be to implement; so the benefits might not be worth the cost.

If HTC replies that the cost/benefit ratio is not worth future effort, I will happily cease discussions on this topic.

I thank the community for entertaining this discussion in the above link.

I am afk for a great amount of the time I'm logged on.  Sometimes that afk is in tower, sometimes I spawn in somewhere, point my tank in the right direction & afk while hoping that I don't hit a hill or tree otw.

I do see where there would be heavy complaints about being kicked out of a full arena (say... where your squaddies are) & not able to get back in after the auto time-kick. I wouldn't object to an automatic time-kick at all for long-time afks though. Seems fair.

I have a family, I can't sit down for 3 hours solid and play.

I play for 30 minutes, take 20 minutes off, and repeat.

I'm not at all in favor of this idea.

I run my business out of my house so I sneak a sortie in here and there between phone calls and jobs. Even when i do get to sit and play at night I still get calls that cause me to go AFK for extended periods.

I dont think this is a good idea  :frown:
