Bear in mind this was Australia's' RIGHT wing who did this to us. The Liberal party is the Oz Right wing politicians, The Labour Party is the Left.
Either way you cut it, we were screwed.

i'm familiar with the political orientation of the aussie liberal and labour parties but you are probably not aware that in nz it was a conservative national government that instigated the arms act reforms, and no doubt they would have taken it through to the legislation stage if they had of not been chucked out of government first. it was their idea, so they were hardly of a mind to challenge the liberal/socialist labour government that replaced them.. and they didn't. in fact, apart from support from several of the minor political parties nz shooters rights groups and organizations were largely left battling the reforms alone, and the relative ease with which you guys were rolled didn't make it any easier.

I really REALLY don't want this to turn into a huge gun debate.
I went to the meetings and was part of the pro-gun debate. There was a HUGE number of people that actively opposed this, but they were swept under the carpet. King Johnny and his crew knew it was unpopular but they did it anyway. it was not helped at all by the fact that the media liked the concept and the only coverage given to those against the legislation was for the more extreme lunatic fringe.
In short the idea was rammed down our throats by the media and the bleeding hearts. By the time an election came around it was a done deal, no Government in this country would have the balls to roll it back, the media (the real driving force behind out politics) would tear them to pieces. One thing I have always stood by is : Only the gullible ever gave up their guns :noid
The biggest victim of the last 20 years of touchy-feely PC let's all wallow in our own mediocre crapulence (sic) was the Australian way of life.

I'm not hearing a bunch of happy happy over the whole deal here...  I don't know any aussies who are happy about it.

If I did.. I would not know that guy for long.  I would have no use for him.   Her? well..  women are women.. ya gotta cut em some slack for not knowing anything about the world and for the hormone thing but...  I just can't stand the accent..  it is worse than the Scottish one of my grandparents.

lazs

And many Europeans can't stand the way Americans speak .... drawling....
I for one like the way the Aussies, the Kiwis, the Scotch, the Paddies, the Taffies and all the sorts of English speak, be it London or Newcastle.....Ever been over there Lazs?

for those who asked.. yes.. I have been to england and Scotland and my grandparents came from there.

The accents range from sophisticated to childish to gibberish.. I was told I had an accent.   I said.. "If I have an accent then why is it that you can understand every word I say but I can't understand a frigging thing you say?"  and...  "If I have an accent.. then why do you guys sound just like me when you sing?"

I have not been to aussie land.. I belong to a Healey club that has some members.. and..   you can't swing a dead cat in America without hitting one of you guys who is either now a citizen or doing everything in his power to become one..

They seem extremely happy to be able to own firearms..  The good thing is.. it is their choice.. not the governments or the metrosexuals but theirs.

I have been to europe and I have been to canada and mexico.    I don't live in a place with little pocket countries a healthy man can walk across in a day or so.  we have states... lots of em.. they all are a little different and I have seen most of em.    I drive my own car or motorcycle to see em.

If you haven't seen anything but a few big cities in America then you haven't seen any of America.. the big cities are just like the big cities in other countries.. dirty crapholes full of self absorbed aholes who want to run everyone elses life and worry more about their shoes and fingernails than anything else.

Very simple American television shows & movies have been around for a very long time & have been exported all over the world. So us foreigners have grown up listening to a very broad range of American dialects. Until Crocodile Dundee came out almost no one here In the USA had much experience with Australian Accents.

Lazs:

I guess you refer to the Vatican  :devil

Anyway, seriously, some of the "city" thing really gets on my nerve. When cities think they are the country, while the trouth is that the city cannot survive without what's outside it, and that does not work both ways.
Everybody cannot live in a city, while everybody could live outside a city...

Still, you have to admit, despite being governed by a mob of interfering media clowns we're doing allright.
We have some of the best beaches in the world, provided you can live with the sharks, the (extraordinarily deadly) Box Jellyfish and the pretty yet poisonous Blue Ringed Octopus. Our bushland is beautiful yet harbours some of the deadliest insects and reptiles known to man. The Northern wetlands play host to an enormous variety of life which include the impressive but notoriously short tempered Salt Water Crocodile.
Even our unique wildlife though outwardly docile can be deadly.
The innocuous male Platypus has a poisonous spur that can inflict a very painful injury, The Kangaroos and Emus can disembowel a man with a single kick of their powerful legs. While a photoshoot with that cute looking Koala on the fencepost might sound like a nice idea, dozens of tourists have been admitted to hospital from trying to catch one. Even if you get to hold one at the zoo, they pee without warning (Vile sticky acrid vitriol) and their mood can change faster than Rosie O'Donnell without Prozac.
It's actually easier to list all the things that cannot kill or injure you here ;)
NZ sure seems a nice comfy place, but as a wise man once said, "You cannot live in boiling mud"

Great show I voted #2

Funny though....I thought the Kiwis had been successfully invading us for years!  :D    Hell, we even let one coach the wallabies...

As for gun laws - I hate it to break it to Laz but you still can actually have a firearm in australia, but even little Johnny Howard and his cronies worked out that you don't need an M-4 to control rabbits.
In '96 75-85% of australians were happy with, or supported even more restrictions on firearms, and I'd very suprised if thats changed since so you don't need an Irish woman to tell you where the land lies

Btw Bad luck with those Afrikaaners on saturday our Anzac brothers, hopefully we'll have a better result this weekend in Perth

Did the same SD67, not much hope though with all of the Knee twitching going on after the nut job Martin Bryant had his day out though.
Opened the eyes to the gullibility's of the general public big time.
Still we must like our convict heritage cause the government created more criminals in one swoop than any other piece of legislation ever introduced into the country.

Now please stop this side track...
