Next weapons purchase
« on: July 13, 2008, 04:51:30 AM »
Just wondering what you guys would recommend for a next weapons purchase.  Went out and bought a Yugo SKS at the exchange yesterday, didn't get a chance to shoot it yet, maybe later today.  They have a Bushmaster .223 for $1000 that I was thinking about or an AR-30 for $1650.  There's also a SOCOM II that I was looking at.  I'd really like to get a Garand which I figure is going to be about $1000.  I've also been thinking about a machine gun or sniper rifle.  Any opinions?

Well...all was good until you mentioned the "machinegun" and that left a lot of us on the fence. First off you'd need a class-lll license to legally purchase a full auto weapon and if you aint a gun dealer your odds of having one are pretty low. And if you were into firearms that much, to have a class-lll, you probably wouldnt have to ask using the "machinegun" generalization. So now we are left with the feeling you are mocking law abiding gun owners like the rest of us are.

Had you asked normally I'd probably say buy a Garand in order to own a piece of history as well as a fine plinker.

And again, Rich shows how full of poop he is.

It's not a class 3 license, but a class 3 tax.  50 or 60 bucks per Machinegun.  If you're clean enough for the Air Force Academy (IIRC), you're probably clean enough to pass the background check.  Unfortunately, the supply of MG's is so controlled that their prices range from 5 grand to 20 grand, even for the most commonly produced machine guns of the world.

If that price isn't restrictive to you, neither would the price of ammo be.  With the dwindling supply of surplus ammo from the cold war, you'd most likely be burning up at least 12 dollars every time you "Rock and Roll."

As for the Bushmaster and AR30?  I'm not too familiar, but that seems awfully expensive.  The Garand's price tag is about right.  It should be a nice one for 800-1000.

As for a sniper rifle?  It's a roadkill scare tactic assertion that you're actually going to get a sniper rifle.  You'll be looking at a hunting rifle.  If you really want to "Feel" like a sniper, look for a synthetic stock.  For the Model 70 / Rem 700, you're looking at 500-800 for pretty much all calibers.

Scrap the machine gun and sniper rifle ideas then, general consensus is the Garand?

I would recommend the M1A  (M14) over the Garand.  Garand is a fine weapon, but the M14 has improvements over the Garand.

It might surprise you stupid but until this moronic comment your name didnt really register with me at all. Now its changed to "Stupid".

The state I live in only allows for class-3 dealers to own them. Some states do not allow anyone to own them.

Now do you understand where their might be some confusion? Stupid! Thats your new name, "Stupid". And its going to stay that until you reach 12yo and learn how to talk to people. Get that? Stupid!

CMP

How does $600 for a service grade sound?

A few hoops to jump through, but pretty minor and nothing you should have any issue with at all being current military.

Get a Carbine while you are at it for even less

There's a guy in Prescott, Az that has a bunch of Garands for about 200 bucks. I'll ask my buddy in Phoenix if he still has this guys info. My buddy bought 2.

You can find a good Garand for about around 800, i found several around 800 at a local gun show. If you spend over 1000 dollars for an m1 i would hang it on the wall. Try Gun Broker, there usually are several different auctions for m1s. http://gunbroker.com/

I'd like to get my hands on an M-14 but I'd be also happy with a Garand.

An M1a would set you back 1400 bucks and on.  The standard stock M1a was up for 1500 bucks, with the match grade models up around 1900 / 2000.  I just saw this today at my local gunshop, however they are a little overpriced.

There's nothing wrong with getting a machine gun, or sniper rifle.  Just know that the use of those terms can give many of the pansy folk like Rich the heeby jeebies.

Hmmmm.... usually; the decision process would follow what the expected use would be... balanced against what ammo costs (no extensive shooting/training = paper tiger pushover target with a freebie pickup' weapon next to the body).

For home defense the wife can be successful with; a semi-auto shotgun.

For point defense, urban; commie martyr 7.62x39 carbines do a pretty decent job of shooting thru urban cover.. cheaply. Mouse guns (5.56) are pitiful urban weapons.

For stand off work and advancing against point defense carbines and 5.56 mouse guns.... a battle rifle. (.308, 7.64x54, 30-06) Quality weapons in this class are the FAL, M1A, M1, Druganov. A bit pricey to obtain, pricey to feed in some cases. But, utterly invaluable when the chips go down.

If you were to pick one from the three groups above.... and only one; then the Battle Rifle is the way to go. Get yours now before they become impossible to get.

for sniper rifle I think its an easy answer....The Remington model 700 in .308. Also know as the M24a1(army), or the m40a1(marines)

I got my AR-15 M-4 flat top from GSE, in fact a few of my friends bought them at the same time. I love it!!!! I also add a bunch or accessories and toys too it. Hand guard, Gas block, fore grip, scope, laser, flashlight, bayonet, sling, and comp. pistol grip.
I am thnking of getting there ar-10 with eth wilson barrel

http://www.gunsmokeenterprises.net/

this comany has a few contracts with some of the local law enforcment agencies and they all love the gun. I have about 3500 rounds through mine and it has yet to jam or have any problems. When I first heard about them I was sceptical, but I am a true believer in there product now!!

the second gun is the one I have M4 flattop.  :rock
