Paint balls instead of live ammo
« on: July 14, 2008, 08:49:58 AM »
Paint balls, for practice fighting... Because lets face it, violence should always be the absolute last resort--even in a simulator.

With paint balls, you don't have to actually kill your enemy, or force him to jump out of his plane. You can make your point with a few well-placed shots, snap him a salute, and fly back to base, satisfied in the knowledge that you've bested your opponent--and that both of you will live to fight another day.

Before anybody starts spouting off about ballistics modeling, please spare your breath. This is a simulator, afterall, and we can retain standard live-ammo ballistics even with the paint balls... Sheesh, guys.

Ya know..

I think you're on to something here.  And after the sortie, you can land at your field, taxi up to the re-arm pad, and a flock of vagrants converge on your plane and wipe off the paint with spit-encrusted washcloths and squeegies.

Open the cockpit and toss out a couple perkie tokens and off you go.  Ready for more action.

I'm with you drone... Of course, it would help if they could model late 70s manhattan to make those vagrants more realistic, but hey, that's whole new request, right?

Oh, absolutely.  And the skinners can model them from local examples, I would expect the Amsterdam folks will look different from Atlanta, NYC, or Uttumwa.
Build in some weather logic to dress them up with garb appropriate for the climate.  Rhinewinter map would include wool overcoats..  Ndisles would resort to thongs... hmm.. we may want to rethink that...

Now, back to the paintballs themselves.. I think it would be usefull if each calibre had it's own color.

And, I actually do like the paintball idea.  The combination of colors could be quite interesting.

A 40mm paintball hit might actually make splat big enough to obscure much of the view--given the correct angle.

This might create a hazard, and the fight would become deadly again.

Hmm.. good point.  Maybe some logic to prevent the cockpit glass from being obscured. Also, instead of all that disgusting blood for pilot wounds, a small little band-aid graphic in an inconspicuous location would be better.  And a little oil-can to replace all that goo on the windshield too.

With all due respect, drone, I think that a bandaid would be inappropriate. The paintballs do leave welt, bloody ones occasionally, but there is no penetration here.

remember, we are trying to avoid overly realistic simulated damage or injury. I think that splatter is enough. You are correct, however, in that we need to remedy the paint obscuring the view problem.

Perhaps there can be a function where the pilot opens the canopy and wipes it with a rag? Paintball paint is almost impossible to wipe off in this fashion--at least not without leaving heavy streaking--but for the purpose of the game, a token wipe can be made to effect cleaning. As a trade off, the stick will have to remain centered during the cleaning, since the pilot is not holding it while wiping.

Are you nuts?  Do you have any idea how dangerous it is to lean outside a cockpit at 200+ mph???!!??

Birdstrike, debris, hail, bees.. Oh, the horror!!

No.. maybe an elevated touchless carwash hangar type thing set at different altitudes for the arena selected.  It could have high power jets of water ( softened, of course ) to wash off  the paint.   Just fly though and 'voila' .. all spiffy.

Then you'd have to deal with the Vagrant union and their inablility to provide for themselves due to lost wiper revenue.

Just make the paint see through, so  it it will tint the window but not obscure the view.

Inflight pressure wash--built on the same concept as a refueler, only with a series of firehoses set on spray (solid stream would lead to other hazards).

The plane used to deploy this system would have to be a B-29, of course. No nook.

Well, the plane would have to be a cargo variant.  The B29 cargo version was the C97.

Unfortunately, the only C97 available before the end of WW2 was the XC97 prototype.  3 of those were built.

We would need the C54 Skymaster, I'm sure.

The Cargo Version of a B-24 could work. It could just be an AI flying in circles and you cant shoot it down. It will only do that for it's own country or until it's orginal base is taken.
