Yep, after seeing it, I agree that none of the outlandish silly villains (Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc, Penguin) will work in the new Batman series. Problem is, I can't think of any more believable, somewhat-realistic villains they could use.

Uh HELLO! The penguin died in an earlier batman movie. Remember the missile toting penguins. Danny Devito was the artic bird.

Mav, I'm speaking of the latest series of films. Like Engine said, the earlier films don't really count. This is a reinvention of the character and storyline.

I just got back from seeing it.  Wouldn't recommend it for anyone younger than 13 but I have to say I'm impressed and will definitely buy it on DVD when it comes out. HL did a fantastic job.

Maverick,

Batman Begins/Dark Knight, as has been stated, are a completely new continuity. They have nothing to do with the earlier films.

Think of it this way:

The Daniel Craig's James Bond in Casino Royale is NOT the same James Bond that Connery, Lazenby and Moore played (these three all had continuity, including the mention in The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only of Bond's wife, killed by Blofeld in OHMSS).

Also, the Penguin as a deformed mutant was ENTIRELY the invention of Tim Burton. The original Penguin was actually one of the most "normal" (physically and mentally) of the major Batman villains.

The Tim Burton Batman was on ABC Family tonight. Nicholson's Joker is like night and day next to Ledger's. Ledger tapped into something very twisted for his performance, but from what I know of the history of the series this is the closest anyone has come to portraying the Joker as he appeared in the early days of the comics. He created a character that will be remembered in 5-10 years in the same breath as Hopkins' performance as Hannibal Lektor as the greatest villains of the modern era of film.

Whoever is called upon to fill the role in the next movie (let's face it, there WILL be one) is just not going to be the same.

I honestly left the theater a little depressed and disturbed. This is a dark, DARK movie. It's not just physically exhausting but psychologically as well. Much of it is owed to Ledger's Joker, but I think Nolan from the start had no intention other than ripping out the heart of the audience.

I saw it last night :D 

Batman Begins/Dark Knight make the others look like half star B movies.

TNT is playing nothing but Batman movies today... and they are all the sucky ones.

Ledger with a great performance, twitchy and frightening (in a Hannibal Lector way!). Wish they hadn't dealt out another solid bad guy in this movie though...especially since Ledger's great performance might make it impossible for anyone else to step in.

it was a great movie...2.5 hours seemed to cut it off too soon.

I thought if they left Harvy Dent with the scene With Gordon in the Hospital when he asked "what was that name they called me in precinct?" It would have left for a good third movie, Aaron Eckhart could have done an entire film as Two Face. They did a good job developing his character. However seeing The Joker come out of the hospital in the nurse's outfit was a great image.

One of my friends is really into comic books and he told me how the new batman series is more like the original comic books than the original movies could have ever dreamed. He was particularly impressed with the inclusion of characters that were notorious sexual offenders and things of that nature in Batman Begins. If the comic book villians weren't as unbelievable as the Tim Burton movies, then I think there can be a sequel. However as many others have already said, following up Ledger's performance will be near impossible. His laugh is even nerve wracking.

I remember that, shortly before his death,Ledger mentioned in an interview how he was troubled and depressed by the character and had trouble sleeping. I was talking with my brother-in-law about this earlier today, and it really makes you wonder if Ledger tapped into something for the role that couldn't be put back again.

I've heard similar remarks by other actors who have taken a the same approach and really get into the heads of their characters, and had some problems with readjusting again.
