Remote Control Bomb Bay Door Opener
« on: March 25, 2001, 07:23:00 PM »
Ok I have to admit it, I am forgetful. I veryoften am peering into my bombsight swerving into perfect firing position only to toggle bombs and get the frustration of baydoorus interuptus.  I forgot to open the &^%( Bombbay Door AGAIN!  I have heard others complain so its not just me. Could we have a Setup Toggle Option of Auto Bomb Bay Door Opener, where the door opens when you go into Bombadier Position and CLoses when you leave it automatically? I know this would have some performance issues, adding drag when maybe you dont need to, but thats why its an option. Only us old forgetfull types need to select it. Come on here Im paying top dollar for this ride. I want the Luxury Options Package please!

agreed, HTC should model a little leprechaun that opens your bomb bay doors.  Dude if ya cant remember to open your bay doors then park that thing in the hanger and leave it there. (no flame intended, i just cant see this being a problem)

Instead of leaving it in the hanger, can I just take it up anyway and feel like a big retard when I've forgotten the bay doors for the millionth time?    I don't think HTC should change it at all...it's not their fault some of us are challenged!

I have to agree with Loser and SOB on this one.  Even though I've been there and done that before, as most ALL have at least once. Believe me, it only takes a few times of this happening before your brain kicks in and you no longer forget. Now I usually open the bomb doors well in advance of my run.  I don't think there's any drag penalty modeled in AH for open doors (at least none that I've seen). Pilot error is not a gameplay issue.  Pretty soon, we'll have our guns automatically fire whenever we have an nme in our sights (to take this thread to the extreme) :-)

Everytime my copilot forgets to open the bay doors I get all his beer.

I will never run out.
No auto doors.

Yello1, be thankful they fixed the drop bug.

In the good old days, back when we had to walk 5 miles through snow to the top of the telephone poles to play AH there was a bug which caused bombs to fall to the bay floor if the doors were not opened.

Then when you have turned for the second pass and were almost done swearing about forgetting to open the doors, you open the doors and the previous salvo that did not crash through the closed doors fell out and all you bombed was some shrubbery and a few hapless sheep.

And the swearing started over again.

Ok Ok I admit I don't really do it much anymore, usually just if I close it after the first pass to deal with a fighter (In my mind the open door should make you slower AND expose you to damage easier, since the doors in place should provide some minro structural support).  If there is no penalty to the door being opened then I will try not to close em at all.  LOL on the dropping to bay floor and as to the guns auto firing when in your sights heh I'll take two of those please!!

Can't help but wonder...

If you don't open the bay doors, and you drop the bombs, resulting in them falling to the bay floor, only to drop when you finally remember to open the doors....  Where in the math did somebody equate the result as a bug?  Sounds to me like everything acted precisely as it should have.

Khavren, I have no clue how strong the bay doors were in reality but I think if I actually dropped 3 @ 1,000lb bombs without opening the doors the bombs would open them for me.

That did not happen so something was bugged somewhere, I think

Anyhow, this problem has been solved.

The bombs weigh how much???

The Lbs you see identifying a bomb isn't the physical weight of the bomb itself.  It's the impact in pounds that it produces.

Well, atleast the german 1000kg (~2000lbs) bombs that the finns had during WW2 weighed about 1000kg, AFAIK.  The Ju88 A-4 carried two of those underwing.  Not modelled in AH. Yet.

Open bomb bay doors as part of your takeoff checklist +)
No drag from them anyways

not completely sure but I believe the weight of a bomb actually reflects power of the explosive charge(as in 'power of charge= x pounds of TNT'). not gross weight of bomb.
so a 1 megaton atomic bomb doesn't actually have a gross weight 2,000,000 pounds. also in WWII where the charge would usually be TNT or something similar the gross weight would actually be more.

I do believe that during WWII the weight reflected the weight of the unit.

A 250 pound bomb weighed 250 pounds.

Maybe not auto-opening doors, but maybe an indicator lamp while in the bomb sight?

Ideally, a light that would continuously flash red (on/off) while the doors were closed, and then go steady green once the doors were opened. I highly doubt anyone would forget to open the doors then.

I don't fly bombers very much, but when I do, I think there is enough to worry about once you get into the sight over a hotly contested airfield. I worry more if I will be able to drop without being shot and really hate it when my pass is wasted because I forgot to ht "open" after clearing my 6 at the last second before jumping to the sight.

A red flashing light would remind me quickly. After all, if you miss on the first pass, sometimes turing around becomes impossible.

Okay so I'm not as much of a history buff, so I did some reading (my curiosity got piqued) and found that bombs did indeed weigh that much at one point.

In fact I jes learned that the Lanc's would carry 1000lb bombs up to 14k (guess that's why it's modeled to carry up to 14 bombs  ) and even carried bombs weighing in excess of 2500lbs, the only bomber capable of carrying a bomb of such magnitude (due to size not weight) at the time.

So any crack I made before was in ignorance.
