AH Locks up
« on: July 20, 2008, 10:48:44 PM »
So it seems that Randomly my game will freeze up at least 4-5 times a week. It never seems to happen while doing the same thing, this last time i was trying to start recording film. And another time i remember i was switching to an external view of a formation of buffs. It always seems to zoom in on the top left side of my screen for some reason. I don't know what this could mean, But i do recall that it has happened in the past when a Sound driver feature, "Audio ESP" has engaged. My MoBo is Asus, and it has built in SoundMax audio. I am also running an AMD processor, but have installed the needed fixes. If need be i can post my DxDiag, but so as not to spam a large text body if not needed I have left it out.

See the thing is I use FS Auto start, and i doubt this computer, that plays Crysis on High wtih 30-40 fps needs hardware upgrades to handle AH.

Skuzzy was pointing out that if Aces hard the same eye candy that Crysis, or CoD has you would need a cray to run it. A flight sim type game has a huge draw on the CPU. If it spending time doing other crap...like all the fancy stuff the Vista added, it can't run the game well. That's why you have to tweak it to play Aces.

Lockups are usually driver related.  Many of the Vista drivers are really very buggy.  NVidia's early Vista drivers were absolutely horrible.

A DXDIAG output would be helpful.

Games that are video centric tend to place less strain on the CPU so they can run the video and move the stress to the video.  Any decent flight simulator will always require far more CPU power than a first person shooter due to the physics involved with flight modeling.  There are many other things I could comment on, but they really are not germaine to the discussion.

Might consider upgrading that video card driver as the 1xx.xx series drivers has suffered a lot of problems.

That was the latest Omega driver, I've updated to normal Nvidia drivers, we'll see how it plays out.

Ok, time to get your definitaion of "freeze" up.  Please describe it in detail.  Does it require a hard reboot to get the computer back?

Ok then. The game video and audio both lock up, audio continues to play the same sounds as when it froze. Alt+F4 will NOT close the game. Alt+Tab will NOT minimize the game. Sometimes the Win-key will bring up my task bar, but i cannot click on anything or even see my mouse pointer. Ctrl+Alt+Del does NOT bring up the Task Manager, or i cannot see it. I can using keyboard commands switch users log off, shutdown, or restart. Usually to fix the problem fastest is to switch users, and relog into my account of my computer. After i do that I can Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the task manager, and can kill AH from there.

I've had that sort of freeze-up in the past when my antivirus (or firewall, they're both Norton) have popped-up windows asking whether aceshigh.exe can connect to the internet...and yes, those things are extremely annoying to get rid of.

I've found that a way to get out of them is to have another window open when you start up AH, so for example task manager, or notepad.

Afk for a year or so.  The name of a gun turret in game.  Falanx, huh?

I shut down my AV and dont have a system firewall because I'm on a home network. And nothing is overclocked, just have my fan speed on my card cranked up so it doesn't run at 55c+ idle.

I have the same exact problems when I'm playing.  The same exact symptoms.  Skuzzy, I'll PM you my dxdiag.  It happens frequently.  Not to blame it on the new patch but it seemed to have started with the new patch.  Please throw me a life line.
