a nuke? Why wait until something is in the Black Sea? hell they have ICBM's that can hit stuff from 8500 miles away.

I know it's wakypedia, but it's all I can come up with at short notice.

These can be armed with a small nuke that will pretty much vaporise most of the TG without even having to actually hit anything.

Tssk, tsssk. You said nuke...

..perish the thought.

Really. not even putin the magnificent, slayer of grozny, redeemer of the rodina and master of all the russias would not be so stupid.

Yeah but an ICBM is a bit of overkill when a nuke tipped torp can still do the job from 7500 yards+ with minimal footprint and much less collateral damage.
Oh and I agree they probably wouldn't be that stupid. A couple of well placed conventionally armed ones will be just as effective, they travel much to fast for conventional anti torpedo countermeasures to intercept.
I was simply pointing out that your massive TG's are not as invulnerable as you guys seem to think they are.

Ahh.. but you see; we do know they are vulnerable. We also know that any overt act of aggression against a US Warship operating in international waters... no less a US Warship with 3,000 Americans on it, would be viewed as an act of open war.

It's presence is in effect, both a 'balance of power' move in the area AND a 'double-dog dare yah' signal to russia that says we unequivocally support Georgian Sovereignty... and we won't have to fire a shot to make the point.. just have her make an invited port call at Poti. :D

I'll agree with you here, SD-Insofar as I myself know, no U.S. CVBG has ever had to do anything more than fly off airstrikes' and air interdiction in coastal countries. I don't think they've ever had to actually fight either surface/sub-surface threats' in any of the conflicts' the U.S. has been in since 1945.

But that doesn't mean they don't know how.

I haven't been reading this thread, but 50 pages in 1 week, that has to be some kind of record for "The O' Club".

What I found intriguing was the amount of what I'd see as "old kit" being used by the russians, looked like some old hinds, even Tu-22s? And it sounds like the georgians knocked down a few Su-25's.

So even though the russians rolled through I wouldn't say it was a clean victory.

The b52 and A10s are also old but still excellent. That is also the case with the TU-22 and SU25s. The former is still in production.
