Russian, I have a serious question for you. A while back you posted that you had been accepted for a USAF UPT slot.

(since I've been part of this board for many years and made some good friends here...let me inform you lads)

Yes....I've been selected....shocking, I know.

WOot.

Now to pass medical...finish OTS ....UTP ....  :)

Here's the question: If you get your wings and get assigned to a fighter or fighter/bomber squadron and are ordered into action in a situation like this Georgia action, what are you going to do?

Suppose in 3 years you're in an F-16 unit that gets ordered to stop another Russian advance into Georgia? Are you going to follow orders and kill Russian tanks and aircraft or are you going to stand down?

Thats been said about so many wars in history that all you have to do is keep the actual sentence and just replace the country name as each absurd war starts. " A war over _______.. That'd be so absurd." Just fill in the blank as the current absurdity warrants.
American war of independence... I'm saying a war mainly between the US and Russia, over missiles that Poland asked for partly for protection against Iran and mostly because of Russia's tantrum in Georgia...  I think that's just absurd, given what it would spill out into, easily enough.

Even that was absurd from an English point of view. Had England been a country that had a King with common sense he would have seen the absurdity of British policies in the New World. Many Yanks considered themselves loyal subjects of the crown and only rebelled due to the tyranny of British policy. In the end the Brits lost everything due to the absurdity in their foreign policy.

Excess pride is absurd. Most of all when power is in the hands of one. Look at Saddam, as absurd a fool as ever existed. We Yanks have a problem understanding men like him because power here is held by many here and everyone has to answer to sombody. Even a President does, congress, the voters, our Allies . Who does Putin really have to answer to?

With these recent developments there is a real possibility of a serious confrontation between Russia and the West/America. History insists such an absurdity is possible because all the future is is history on re-wind.

Well this is all working out well for America, the american government not the people. The purpose of the missle shield was to create friction so that the existance of Nato could be justified so that the US can maintain influence and military presence in Europe. But this episode has proven much more effective to that end.

All of Eastern Europe will be crying out for missile shield emplacements after this. A nice boost for your defence industry. :aok

How a missile shield is supposed to protect against all those ICBMs I don't know. Looks to be purely a political pawn in this game. I can see why Russia could feel agrieved on the subject.

They have a choice in Russia, Tronski. They can choose any radio station they want as long as it is Radio Moscow. :D

I have BBC World, CNN Intl, Euronews, plus French and German channels here.

The radio I usually listen to is Echo of Moscow, pro-Western right-wing "liberal" stuff.

Nice to hear that you can actually watch Russia Today.

The purpose of the sheild? Well...here http://www.missilethreat.com/ . If anything it gives NATO options if an Iran confrontation developes. More reading on Iran.http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/iran/index.html

An additional purpose would be acceptance by NATO and protection against the Empire that has crushed all of eastern Europe before.

But I believe even Europeans are leery about a Islamic Fundamentalist Theocracy/Dictatorship developing the ability to lob IRBMs, armed with WMDs, onto their cities unimpeded. By contrast, compared to these unwashed fanatics, the Russians are models of reason.

I mean what is this bearded lunatic running Iran has a dream one night and thinks God told him to shoot off a bunch of missiles???

If my understanding of the whole thing is correct, didn't Georgia start all this? And then Russia kicked them out? Sounds to me like the Georgians were trying to drag in the West and when that didn't happen they sued for peace and now the Russians are the bad guys?

It's the old he said she said.

Georgians say the South Osetians separatists were attacking them and the Georgians countered.

Russians say the Georgians attacked South Osetian separatists and the Russians countered.

They didn't stop with just South Ossetia. They grabbed Abkhazia and now occupy the strategic port of Poti in Georgia proper, not to mention Gori.

This isn't about South Ossetia anymore.
