Forced to retaliate for what? YOU are the only ones threatening anyone! And this isn't about retaliation, either. YOUR general is threatening to strike FIRST, NOW, just for them HAVING a defensive system in their country.

You know what MAD is?

You mean we are not targeted by your missiles!? So you deny multiple plans of first nuclear attack on USSR de-classified by your DoD?!

Who told you some Russian general said about first nuclear strike now? We have nukes to prevent possible aggression against Russia and it's allies, according to our 1990s military doctrine, but who's speaking about it now?

I'm fully aware of the concept of Mutually Assured Destruction.

It's YOUR general and YOUR politicians who have been threatening Poland, and the rest of Eastern Europe, ever since the possibility of a missile defense system existed. And now that they've revived their plans of conquest and empire building, and after they've invaded Georgia, they're thumping their chests and threatening louder and more often.

So true.

The much vaunted missile shield is obsolete anyway. It's a vulnerable piece of technology that can be simply targeted with low flying cruise missiles or pre-emptive spec-ops strikes. In a shooting war it's a stumbling block that can easily be turned against you.

That is true, SD. It's not perfect, it can be spoofed by decoy missiles' as well. However, it's better than nothing. And cruise missiles can be defended against with land-based CIWS systems, and the missile shield sites' guarded against SPETSNAZ attacks.

As a side note, we have already surpassed the General Climate discussion thread in length and are fast approaching the gun thread length.....maybe someone should PM Skuzzy and ask for a sticky on this one too?  :D

Of course if Russian cruise missiles or spec ops teams attacked defensive ABM sites in Poland, that would serve as irrefutable notification of an intent to launch a first strike.

If you choose to think of the ABMs as vulnerable and ineffective in that case, you'd have to admit that they'd serve admirably as a tripwire.

I'd think the signal to lauch would be given upon validated reports of attacks on allied ABM sites. Thus, it'd be a pretty stupid attack.

There's a lot of layers to an onion.

Anyway,Boroda is just tooting his country's horn. They been in the dumpster so long that this little military adventure makes them feel like Supermen again. I wouldn't put much stock in it. I think he's just entertaining himself.

Hmmm... after the Poland Deal, wonder if discussion of the development of an 'inner NATO', the baltics, ukraine and georgia forming a Eastern European Treaty Organization, replete with US bases, support, missile basing and rhetoric is in play.

...seems they want defense, NOW.

(can't for the life of me figure out why)

Gotta be freaking out the Russki's.

...gawd, listen to 'em wail about Poland.. red faced table pounding already!

When you look at how Soviet built equipment fared in the first Gulf war vs it's Western counterparts, I'm not so sure the Russians/USSR ever were Supermen except in their own deluded minds. ;)

I'll be honest, Toad...I'd feel much better if Vladimir Putin, the de facto leader of Russia, didn't seem to feel the same way.

His overbearing/overreaching ego is starting to get people killed.

I think he has killed before. A certain Litvinyenko springs to mind. Russo-British relations have been shot ever since.

I only hope Boroda is blustering because he is a minority here and on the defensive. Otherwise... cue music...
