The US won't mess with anybody with the ability to fight back... :lol
Iraq 'might' have nukes (read; doesn't), US invades.
Iran is trying to create a civilian nuclear program, which would give them the ability to have nuclear missiles; US threatens to invade.
North Korea makes it clear that they want to make offensive nuclear weapons; US negotiates with the unspoken possibility of military action on the table.
Russia, which already has nuclear missles, invades a small country; US wags their finger.

The US won't intervene in this matter, I don't think. I certainly hope we don't, at least.

US has the strongest military in the world. A posting of a fleet with a Nimitz class carrier would make a huge difference.

The difference between North Korea and Iran is that the North Koreans are atLEAST, rational. They'll know when they should stop. Iran doens't care. It's how they were raised, with death as something not so bad. Iranians wouldn't be afraid to die at the hands of a nuke.

Iran isn't trying to create a civilian nuclear program. Face the facts, they've openly said that if they get nukes, Israel will be on the reciving end.

If we're lucky, Russians (and us) wont give the tactical nuclear weapons even a thought when it comes to using them.

The wind for their watcher, the wave for their shroud,
Where palm and pandanus shall whisper forever,

I do. I also like playing the devils advocate, particularly for an argument that is very much an uphill battle. Don't take anything I'm saying here as thinking that Russian military policy and behavior is OK. I know what they've done, especially as they invaded Germany in WWII, as I've read first hand accounts of these atrocities.

That is the biggest hunk of BS I've ever read on these boards. North Korea is MUCH more totalitarian than any of the other countries I listed, even more than the old USSR. Even worse, Kim Jong Il is INSANE. There is simply no better word to describe him.

Motherland....

Your advocating that the missle systems in poland could be considered offensive...or that some offensive system could go in....

As Boroda seems to have left the building again...

How do you feel about Israel bombing irans nuclear plants?

Just curious about your feelings on this as you seem to want to be a pilot....in my countries air force.

angelsandair - quit with histrionical 100 point fonts. And go look at a map. You are starting to look a bit immature.

The missile defence system is a threat to Russia because it theoretically negates their nuclear deterrent; this opens the way for a NATO first strike. I'm surprised no-one can see this. Of course, I don't believe we would strike first - but you need to look at this from the Russian perspective.

I could agree with that except for one minor detail.....there isn't enough ABM's to counter a Russian nuclear assault. (Or counter strike) Only 10 of them are being put in Poland, Russia can easily overwhelm that system.

Certainly this is true. However, we should do whatever is in our own best interest, even if it means not giving the Russians a measure of comfort. They should be afforded the security of MAD only if we have no alternative. If we can negate their nuclear threat we need not look at this from their perspective.

I think that's why we haven't had even stronger action from Russia. They know that they are a token gesture - but NATO encroachment is something they will avoid at (nearly) all costs.

AKIron - not looking at this from a Russian perspective would be a very dangerous thing indeed.
