Bought a smoker
« on: August 31, 2008, 07:54:05 PM »
After months of aggravation and frustration I finnaly got rid of my Power Spec computer and went out and bought a real smoker. From the beginning, on the old puter, I had a lot of video related software problems I could never resolve. For instance Adobe flash would never stay loaded right and usually after a few days I'd have to UI and then RI in order to see video. I tried every fix I could find.

Then I started having a lot of trouble in AH, starting about a month ago. The MB was fried and had heating issues. My video cards would just plain heat up far to much. In short was it worth spending $200 + to fix a 2 year old computer or was it better to spend that money on a new one? So this is what I ended up doing.

Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6001) Service Pack 1 (6001.vistasp1_gdr.080425-1930)
           Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: HP-Pavilion
       System Model: KQ497AA-ABA m9340f
               BIOS: BIOS Date: 06/16/08 11:02:10 Ver: 5.25
          Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU    Q6700  @ 2.66GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.7GHz
             Memory: 6142MB RAM
Page File: 1192MB used, 11203MB available
        Windows Dir: C:\Windows
    DirectX Version: DirectX 10
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
     DxDiag Version: 6.00.6001.18000 64bit Unicode

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GS
     Manufacturer: NVIDIA
        Chip type: GeForce 9500 GS
         DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
       Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0644&SUBSYS_13301462&REV_A1
   Display Memory: 2539 MB
 Dedicated Memory: 493 MB
    Shared Memory: 2046 MB
     Current Mode: 1280 x 768 (32 bit) (60Hz)

It runs great and I can play my game with no problems. I couldnt be happier. One thing I dont understand is I have frame rates set for "unlimited" in AH but get a constant 60 fps as If I checked 60 max. I'd appreciate some input. Thank you.

60Hz is probably the maximum refresh rate (or currently set refresh rate) of your monitor and with vsync on the fps counter is telling you the truth versus the 'lie' you get otherwise.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

Don't turn vsync off unless you'd like rubber bullets and "lag" problems, though. Not saying they would show up if you turned it off, but it's acknowledged that vsync is better left on. It will limit your FPS to the current refresh rate of your monitor as stated, though.

Yeah, I have both monitors set at 60. I heard once that was best refresh rate.

It was at some point. Best refresh rate depends on the monitor now, although 60 Hz is the most "standard."

If you have a Wide Screen Monitor, then 60 FPS is the maximum frames possible.  :salute

Thanks guy. The real issue about the puter was whether to buy the Intel or the AMD.

Thats a whole other can of worms however. Anyway I stuck with the devil I knew.

Currently, Intel is defiantly the way to go. AMD chips are just less bang for the buck, so much so that some see the end of AMD approaching...which would be a biter, since Intel wouldn't have any competition. In any case, I guess that's for the O'Club or HW&SW.

AMDs make me nervous. Most of all with NVidea VCs.

To much heat.
