'HTC-illegal' comments? And a couple of other things....
« on: April 05, 2001, 11:11:00 AM »
A couple of things have started to annoy me about the AH 'community' in recent weeks/months.

It's interesting to hear that Towd has been barred. Fair enough, he shouldn't have said what he did. Abuse the landlord in his pub. and you get barred - night follows day.

Perhaps we ought to continue this neo-McCarthyism and ban people who have said some, frankly stupid, ignorant and above all offensive things. I have seen a couple of things on Ch.1 in my 6 months of being here:

"Let's have trains of Jews in AH."

Not going to win any comedy awards with that.

"No Japanese on channel 1, please."

At least this guy was polite.

Are these people to be barred or even warned? I understand there are now anonymous content monitors, but any controversy has seemed to revolve around 'squeaking' involving offensive language on Channel 1.

I'm just interested to know if there are set criteria relating to comments like the ones given above.

However, what has started to really get on my 'threepenny bits' are the whiners online and (to a lesser extent) offline. Personally, people who scream blue murder on channel 1, because someone didn't play the game their way or they killed need to do two things:

1) Wake up and realise this is actually a game.

2) Actually go outside and try to get a life.

More recently, I've noticed people who complain because their 'team' isn't doing things 'their way'. I wish they'd just go away.

The squelch command is there, sure, but why do people behave in this way? Why the nastiness? Please can I have a personal squelch list?

The good thing is that most people are decent individuals. But the arrogant, pretentious, self-obsessed out there are starting to become a little tedious.

To the 98% of decent people out there - rock on!

If the same person says all of those, cussing out everyone they come across, including and especially the game they're playing, for upwards of 16 months, then yes.

Dowding,

the best approach is to let Pyro take on these disturbed people on a case by case basis.

I frankly got sick of having to squelch channel one the last few weeks I was online.
It was simply getting rediculous.

I hope when I return things have changed for the better.

 What Fatty said.

I'd personally would recommend choosing another time and example for which to choose to make your point Dowding. Right now championing Towd and HIS claim to being banned (can any one confirm this?) makes you look like a bit like Don Quixote.

"neo-McCarthyism".. <snork> now THAT was going over the top and pretty darn pathetic imo.

Dowding, you are comparing towd to individual comments.  Pyro said it pretty clearly:

This constant baiting to serve a craving of conflict and controversy by problem mongers is tiring.

If that doesn't encapsulate towd's presence in the game or on the boards, I don't know what does.

Dowding would I be one of those "Offline Whiners"? Last time I was in the arena it was 1.04 and I was writing an article. I haven't even raided H2H within the past 3 weeks. I have to agree with you that seeing people act like that is annoying. Last time I hosted a H2H game I nailed a guy in a G10 with my Yak. What was the first thing he said? "Damn Yak is overmodeled! Nothing beats G10!!". Apparently he never heard that the G10 was horrid against a Yak down low. He upped in a Yak and I landed after wipping a Pt-Boat off the map. I got back up in a P-38 and kicked his butt again before shooting off some rockets on an Ostwind. His tune didn't really change "P-38 is overmodeled! Nothing beats a Yak!!!". Every time someone else shot him down he sounded like a broken record. I ended up booting him.

A day prior to that, I caught someone who was a little off on his english. All he ever said was "DIE DIE DIE"...had to boot him for parking a Panzer on the runway after he carbombed two guys. Back in 1.04 when I was raiding the arenas I had two experiences in the TA helping guys. The first time I went in for some gunnery practice with a new sight I'd made. BkPhoto was vulching people left and right, so he became my target. Mayhem unloaded on private with a damn funny joke. I logged shortly afterwards.

The second idiot Ghosth and I dealt with in the TA. I forget the name, but he was constantly saying "ME KOREA YOU FIGHT?". After some round-n-round on the radio I dove down (in a Yak) on his Spit V and killed him. What did he say? "FCUK YOU". After which Ghosth proceeded to read him the riot act. Too much ego driving too small of a brain in every case.

The best thing you can do, no matter how badly he gets your gourd, is leave it be. Don't start a flame war, don't insult him, don't do anything but shoot him down. Squelch the guy so he doesn't start any personal attacks on private. If necessary, leave the arena. I've seen the Jew remarks in H2H in the past, watched flame wars start nearly everywhere and over anything. If you want HTC to do something about this in the form of Perma-Squelch, word filter, Shadow Cops, whatever then say so.

Don't like something a person is doing? Speak up but do it politely. Just like the "No Japanese on channel 1 please" guy did. If someone is making nasty comments you don't think anyone should hear, take film of the offending incident and mail it to Pyro or HT.

Have ya read the EULA?

Most people don't.  Seems to me HTC is within their rights here.  If you don;t agree to it, then you don't play.

Westy, the 'neo-McCarthyism' was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. I wasn't serious. Secondly, this wasn't really about Towd, more about the general attitudes of certain people, both on and offline.

I'm just getting a little tired of it all. There are about half a dozen players who use channel 1 as there own 'Channel Angst' - virtually everything they write is a complaint or seems designed to seek attention. I'd like to think these people are adolescents, but sadly (as far as I know) they are apparently adults.

A personal squelch list would be very welcome.

Sometimes Channel 1 can relieve the tedium of long flights, so I tend not to squelch it. Besides, when I die or kill I sometimes <S> the opponent.

CC Dowding. I took what you were saying completely in the wrong way. My apology.
