B-17 Ammo
« on: August 20, 2008, 08:55:11 AM »
Hello all,

My wish is that the ammo in the defencive guns of my B-17 was transferable.  For instance ammo from the chin was transferable to the tail and the

ball.  Is that what they would have done, I can not count the times I have downed three enemy contacts before I have reached the target, only to have no tail

or ball ammo on the egress home.

Thank you for your time  100Bull

I would most definitely agree. Or at least allow us to package up some more ammo that we can use to reload. That way if we don't use it and it's shot by a bandit we can say, "Fireworks!" :D

Or witht he perked ordanance system coming with the combat tour(2 weeks) we could choose how much ammo goes where.Like before you take off you can take ronds from the nose and put them in the ball turret.
Quite frankly, I just don't give a damn.

Heck, why not just have all the ammo "pooled" for the entire aircraft?  You could blow it all from one gun, or jump from one to the other and use "whatever's left" in the plane?

I don't think in RL ammo could be transferred between guns in all aircraft. Some maybe but definitely not all. Would require a lot of coding to allow for some and not for other I think.

But in real life you had some ammo sitting off to the side ready to slap into Betsi should you be running low.

Maybe you did, maybe you didn't.  Depending on the length of the mission, fuel load and bomb load you might not have been able to take extra ammo due to weight restrictions.

The only guns it would be easy to share ammo from would be the waist guns.  All the other gun positions had large ammo boxes that the belts were laid into.  It would be possible to get some ammo from same the chin turret but you'd have to pull the belt out of the ammo tray, not just pick up a box and go with it.

"By now, because of the loss of so many ships (B-17s) that were behind us, we found ourselves to be in the unenviable position of "tail end Charlie"! The battle was now approaching two hours, which for an air battle was rare. Our tail gunner had run out of ammunition and came up to where I was (top turret) to get some of what I had left."
Sam Hewitt 15th Air Force

"There we were, two groups, one a B-17 group and one a B-24. When the fighters showed up the B-24 leader slid our formation in under the B-17 group, for more protection as well as for more defense against the fighters. So where did they attack? Yes right in my corner, low left and last. You can see why they called it Purple Heart Corner. My tail gunner, George Federlin shot up all of his ammo and the waist gunner took more ammo to him."

How about ammo boxes in the sky, floating, when you touch it, you magically rejuvenate your ammo! :D

That's correct.
But, I'm betting you didn't take out 1 ammo box in b17's/b24's as the primary "deep strike" bomber (for the era... till the 29 came around and pwnzor'd  :cry) I'm pretty sure you'd want to make sure you had enough ammo to get there, and home, rather than take the 1 extra bomb... imo at least.

Floating ammo boxes, ammo up points, wow you guys have to much time on your hands.  I'm not asking for

something unreasonable, or unfathomable.  There have been time where I would have given my left foot for

one hundred rounds for my tail gun. By the way I am allways my squads tail end charlie.(I think it has to do

with my inability to form up ha ha)
