Bigger Clearer Maps
« on: August 16, 2001, 07:44:00 AM »
I have read stuff on the clarity of the existing maps and understand that HTC may feel the present clipboard / map interface is "adequate".

However

My squadron flies both AW and AH (some of us flying both some only flying one of the two)

An issue that some of our older members have with AH is the clarity of the map. By older I mean one in particular who is in his eighties and has trouble finding, enlarging, moving and finaly understanding the present AH map system.

We have guys in their sixties, seventies and eighties with us. (plus the odd blind forty somethings like me)

He and others prefer the AW rapid access to a full screen map which is equally rapidly expanded to a magnification of choice which becomes default regardless of other actions between deselecting and subsequent reselection.

Further the AW positional icon is very basic but very visible where as the AH (although with the added benefit of direction indication) can get lost into the background graphics.

Whilst probably very much a minority plea I would ask the following.......

1)Would HTC consider a simple one key press to toggle the map to and from full screen?

2)Could the pixel density of the map be made greater to allow a much higher magnification/zoom?

3)Is it possible (even on the existing maps) to change the locator icon to one much more visible?

4)I understand (but not how) that the map is initially generated from the terrain model. Is it possible to generate a version that is much more map like (16 colour) and less like a sattelite image with lines and numbers drawn on?

5)Could field locating texts fonts stay the same "onscreen" size regardless of zoom level (like with aircraft carriers)? (rather than being part of the back ground map graphic) (even better if the font size was adjustable in setup).

Tilt, the map can be zoomed to withing 2 miles around your position. Use the Insert and Delete keys to zoom in and out.

Fullscreen map not a bad idea either. Would save on some paper (printing AH maps hehe).

I think the map you view is a regular picture where as the AW map used something else.

For me the CA map grid numbers, on the underlying map picture, I find them very blurry when zoomed in even a little and too difficult to use.

No idea what the answer will be but I'm hoping something or someone can help.

Fullscreen map would be a great option.

hit the "z" key as well and the map will get larger.

Left click the + key and the entire map enlarges to almost full screen (and this setting gets saved as default). Then right click that + key and it zooms right down into your present location. Insert and delete keys work for that too. It may not be as simple as pressing a single key, but I think its flexibility is of more value.

Oh.. and the map is just a bitmap image (not some kind of coding thing) so the detail level at some zoom settings suffers unfortunately.

Well thx guys actually we do know all the present controls....

Unfortunatly Nash the enlarged map only stays as default if you have carefully enlarged it and positioned it so none of the clip board leaves the screen. It is then only a little larger than the default......

This was not a critique of the existing system just a hope in the dark that a modification might be simple enough to make to help some guys out who have some difficulty.....

I was not hoping to do away with anything presently installed.

again thx for the suggestions
