iraq, anbar province
« on: September 04, 2008, 04:25:05 PM »
i guess the media has been so busy attacking palin they forgot to tell us about iraq.

""The US military handed over control of Anbar Province Monday, marking a significant milestone in the Iraq war.

Anbar was the deadliest Iraqi province for US troops, with nearly 1 in every 3 Americans killed there. It was once the symbol of Sunni resistance, the base of operations for Al Qaeda, and home to two major US military offensives and the most intense urban combat of the war.

But in the past two years, Anbar has emerged as the symbol of a turnaround as Sunni sheikhs formed "Awakening Councils," ousted Al Qaeda, and created community police forces."

that is the result of the surge McCain wanted and obama did not.

I doubt you will convince even the people on the ground that Anbar is safe today from the surge alone.  Maybe some research will do you good. :aok

Before the surge, Anbar had 5,000 police officers, and the mainly Shi’ite Iraqi Army couldn’t hold its positions in the primarily Sunni province.  Now Anbar employs over 37,000 police officers, and a more balanced military has built trust with the local Sunni population, thanks to the assistance of the Americans.  Anbar becomes the 11th province of 18 to transfer to Iraqi control, and the first primarily Sunni province.

The reason it is far safer is cause the American taxpayer is paying the Sunni militants not to fight.

Thats right, its costing us about 25 million $$ a month to pay them to sit on their arses, sipping tea, and not picking up their AKs.

Supposedly the Iraqi Govt. is creating some kind of jobs training plan and is going to allow some of the insurgents into the Police and security forces. Right now that plan is years behind schedule. The Shiite run central Government knows many of these Sunni insurgents are former Saddam and Baath party men and trust is not a luxury many have in Iraq.

On the other hand our own kids aren't getting killed and maimed like they were before and the Sunni insurgents were very helpful in rooting out Al Qaeda in AnBar. I dont think any of the Iraqis really trust Al Qaeda. But our Government likes to point out the troop surge as the real reason AnBar has calmed down, as all Iraq has, and progress is being made. Its makes them all look like geniuses to say so.

But the real reason is were paying them off not to fight and kill. Funny how the Politicians always forget to point that out.

But that aside, the success of the Marines and other supporting soldiers in that area, led by General Petreaus’ Counterinsurgency Plan and troop surge, have made the country of Iraq and that region a much more difficult, if  not impossible, place for international terrorists to plan and execute their operations.

So we're paying them not to kill "us", so to speak, while Al Quida was paying them to kill "us'.
 I'll take that
