Contrails above 25k
« on: September 04, 2008, 10:33:52 PM »
Whenever I see footage or pictures of high level bombers from WW2, they often had contrails.

Think it would be cool in AH2 if a bomber was at 25k+ there was a contrail for like 6k behind him or something. Would encourage more high altitude bombing, and could look pretty cool to see I think. We already know that fuel/oil leaks looks pretty good on AH2, so i'm sure the hitech crew could whip this up in a jiffy.

I'd rather a change be made that bomber Icon range is variable in relation to their altitude.

Let's say a set of Lancs at 6k or less is icon visible at 10k.  From 6k-10k they are icon visible at 8k.  Then 10k+ icons are visible at the normal 6k.  Might make bomber interception a bit more realistic for the low level bombers and reward bombers who spend the time to gain altitude.  (note that my example altitudes are purely arbitrary, subject to more educated evaluation).

Doesn't have much to do with altitude so much as air pressure, condensation (air temp) and humidity.

But.... At higher altitudes, condensation from the decreased pressure will increase the wingtip vortex, but for our game the majority of contrails would come from engine exhaust...

I wouldn't mind this, it would be pretty cool.  But with contrails do we also start to model wake turbulence?  That would be even better cooler!  Lose control, go into a flat spin from the wash!   :rock

Wouldn't hurt any more than the current clouds or fuel and oil leaks.  Not every visual enhancement will kill FPS! :aok

Oh man, that looks so cool... If they could do it so it comes off the prop tips like that it would be SWEET!

How hard would it be to model prop wash?  That sounds like a cool addition to the game.  I thought I read somewhere that it was already modeled though, I probably misunderstood.

I think that would require the game code to be completely rewritten with fluid air.

Nah, you can just have an animation that simulates it!  However, that will probably lower FPS.

That's why we would have the option to disable contrails on your computer only.

Yup, but I was talking specifically about the wingtip vortex animation.  Contrails in terms of just light smoke wouldn't lower FPS.  However, I wonder if it would be a disadvantage to those without that enabled because it could be harder to spot the Buffs.  But like I said, just light smoke out the back wouldn't cause a problem if that machine can handle the clouds and leaks here now.
