if you bail out when you are wounded, you die.

so you have a certain amount of time to fly home before you blackout for good. You think you're going to last in the sea or forrest while someone comes to pick you up? If you bail out wounded you have to walk to a friendly runway before you black out.

After one bails or ditches, the friendly ground huggers can helps with 1st aid. Enemy troopies can do that too and then one can escape. One can even tie one's own wounds after the A-plane needs no more steering. No way should one die automatically if bailing when wounded  :P

In winter time it does not matter much whether one is wounded or not, if one land in cold open waters. Death by hypothermia comes quickly.
